A mother and her three children were stranded far out at sea as rough ocean waters kept pushing them farther and farther from shore.
With no phone, no way to call for help and the water getting worse, she realized they couldn’t all just wait and hope someone found them.
So she made an impossible decision and told her 13-year-old son, Austin, to leave them behind and try to make it back to shore alone.
Austin started out in an inflatable kayak, but the waves kept filling it with water until he was forced to abandon it. Then, realizing his life jacket was slowing him down, he took it off and began the long swim to shore, battling cold, choppy water for nearly four hours.
When he finally made it to shore, he collapsed from exhaustion. But even then, he forced himself back up and kept moving until he found help, knowing every minute mattered for the family he had left behind.
By the time rescuers found his mother, brother and sister, they had been in the water for around 10 hours and had drifted nearly 9 miles offshore. All three were rescued alive.
Austin Appelbee was just 13 years old when he swam for nearly four hours to get help for his family. That’s the kind of young hero the internet should be talking about.
