BIGGEST HACK OF THE YEAR: HOW $351M WAS STOLEN FROM Bitget 🚨 On September 24, @bitget faced one of the largest attacks on a CEX in 2026. According to the exchange, about $351.6 million was withdrawn. Hot and warm wallets were affected, while cold wallets, according to the team, were not impacted. But the most interesting part here is how exactly the attack happened. THE HACKER DID NOT HACK USER ACCOUNTS According to Bitget CEO Gracy Chen, users’ private keys were not compromised. The attackers gained access to the corporate infrastructure related to wallets and were able to substitute transaction data inside the standard signing process. That is, the system itself actually signed operations that looked legitimate. This is preliminarily linked to the compromise of a third-party tool in the wallet infrastructure. The root cause has not yet been officially disclosed. HOW WAS THE MONEY WITHDRAWN? After the first test transactions, mass transfers began immediately across several networks. In total, the following were affected: Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, BNB Chain, Avalanche, XRP Ledger and Tron. Main EVM collector: 0x770b10b273fC44Fe9197D6bF20F145c2e98463Ee A significant portion of the stolen funds went to it. THE MOST INTERESTING PART / LAUNDERING The hacker almost immediately started swapping the stolen tokens for ETH. Stables were converted through DEX and aggregators so that issuers would not have time to freeze USDT/USDC. One of the addresses bought about 7,111 ETH for ~$19.7M USDT0 in just a few minutes. Overall, the scheme is standard: Bitget → fresh wallets → DEX → ETH → bridges → new wallets Various bridges and routers were used, including Across, CCTP, Stargate, deBridge and others. ETH was then split into large batches, including transfers of 10,000 ETH, and distributed to new addresses. XRP was also split and run through various bridging / swapping services. WHO IS BEHIND THE ATTACK? Officially unknown so far. Gracy Chen stated that some IPs match VPN patterns associated with one of the North Korean hacking groups. But this is only a preliminary version so far. The investigation is ongoing. WHAT ABOUT THE MONEY? Bitget stated that user funds will be covered from the User Protection Fund of $464M+. That is, the exchange does not plan to shift the damage onto users.
