There is nothing more "it's all an illusion/ all life is a state of impermanence" than the Man City story. Crisis is when the truth overpowers the illusion. Go easy on the Man City fans. Their pain is unbearably real. It will feel like death. It is a collective ego death. It will illicit depression, grief and anger. It could have happened to any one of us at our clubs. It's too easy to say they are deluded. When your very sense of identity is under threat, when the past is revealed to have been a lie, your very sense of self is shattered and you will do anything to cling to it, fight for it. This happens to so many of us at some point in our life - the job, the relationship, the status, the external evidence that gives us a sense of value, will, at some point be challenged and bring upon us a crash in self worth and value. This is part of our journey here. It's why we age, why we lose, why we die. Everything is in a constant state of decay and loss - on the outside. The lesson is you are really here to focus on the inside - which never grows old, depreciates or dies. The Man City story is not new. It is very much part of the fabric of this world. When it happens collectively - to a fan base, a nation, a community, a culture, an ethnic group, a religion - it feels like the end of the world, because it really is the end of the world, the external world, the thing we have looked to for our sense of self and value. It is a death. A grief. A loss. But it is also the greatest tool for spiritual growth and expansion and I don't mean religion. True spiritual growth. The power that exists within you - not outside you. The delusion we accuse Man City fans of, is their ego death rattle. Give them space. They are, at some level, fighting tooth and nail to stay alive. We should not be cruel to them. We should be kind. Let them work through it. It is, after all, a catastrophe. They are football fans like us. We all love the game in the same way. Every one of us. It is such a beautiful game because of its simplicity and because of its wonder. Because of its universality. The stars in the game will come and go. Clubs will rise and fall. But the game will live on. Enjoyment in their demise is ghoulish. Be careful, it may not happen to your club but any one of us is one step away from it happening in our lives - the diagnosis, the job loss, the accident, the "out of the blue" circumstances that force us to look inwardly. The theft, the "bad luck", the changes outside our control. We are all on a journey of surrender and no life is free of it. I feel sorry for Man City fans. Truly sorry.
