The American flag in the center of this photo was placed in memory of my grandfather, an Army sergeant. My other grandfather served in the Marines. I think about them and all the Americans, in and out of uniform, who served and contributed to the United States for 250 years. → Standing post, or → Through the courts, or → Appearing on a ballot, or → Doing something to make the country better This July Fourth, think of them... ↳ And pause. Read the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights Do something – anything – to make the United States a better place to live. (ahem: trying to 'own' one group or another on social media this weekend won't do it) On America's 250th, I'll be honoring those who sought, and seek, to improve life for others. On this #MemorialDay, I’m thinking of my visit to Normandy. It’s been a decade since I walked the beaches where the Allies landed on D-Day to liberate Europe from the Nazis. After a long walk that day in 2016, I arrived at the Normandy American Cemetery (pic) 9,387 American war dead are interred there overlooking Omaha Beach. 172.5 acres of sacrifice. There are eight American military cemeteries in Europe, with another 11 battlefield monuments. @usabmc Standing at the one in Normandy, you feel the gravity of history. ↳ And the weight of what those service members gave us. A legacy left to us to protect. A duty to guard against manipulative leaders who seek to plunge the world into conflict using lies and hate. Never again. On this Memorial Day, thanks and gratitude to those Americans who served and died for 250 years, so that we may live free 🙏

I recently had a someone complain a journalist didn’t ask “the right” questions... This person had recently been interviewed — and the questions completely threw them off. So I agreed to watch the interview. Guess what: the journalist asked all legit questions… ones I would have asked! The problem? They weren’t questions this expert had prepared for 🤦‍♂️ No fact-based journalist following ethical standards is going to give you the questions in advance (you *can* ask for topics, though) It’s on *you*, as the expert, to anticipate — and structure your answers for maximum impact. I call it ‘Anatomy of an Answer’... and I teach it to my clients, and at our bootcamps and courses. I spent 25 years covering elections. Here's what still surprises me… From California to DC — • First federal election covered: 2000 • First national convention covered: 2008 • First Election Night on Capitol Hill: 2016 In a quarter-century of political reporting, I've lost count of my fact-check and accountability stories. And yet it still surprises me how many people get duped! 🤦‍♂️ When I was a journalist, I did countless stories on how to spot misinformation and disinformation. Now that I’ve transitioned to media training and coaching, I train experts to do the same. Three tips: 1. If you see political slop that immediately makes you feel anger, rage or emotional — stop. Start fact-checking ✅ 2. If the info already aligns with your political viewpoint and presents no other side — stop. Start fact-checking ✅ 3. If the content you consume demonizes, defames and dehumanizes people who you disagree with — stop. Start fact-checking ✅ → Only you can control whether you’re susceptible to being conned. → Only you can improve your media literacy. → Only you can prioritize truth over lies.
