The Michigan House has unanimously passed HB 5983-84, bills to allow local dists to create Public Innovative Programs. These programs would have a path to modify or waive some state laws (seat time, MMC, common calendar) subject to a local plan & MDE oversight. #miched

The bottom continues to fall out of MI's pupil count. Traditional K-12 public schools estimated to have lost 13.5K FTEs in 2025-26 & projected to lose another 12.5K in 2026-27 & 14K in 2027-28. Charter enrollment largely flat & projected to remain so. house.mi.gov/hfa/PDF/Revenue…

My absolute favorite CREC presentation is the state demographer. TLDR: we have lots of Boomers, we've slowed population loss but are still losing people, immigration to the state has slowed, we're projected to lose another 280K children by 2050. Oof. house.mi.gov/hfa/PDF/Revenue…

HB 5797 now goes to the MI Senate where it will need concurrence. That body cannot constitutionally take up the bill until next week at the soonest. After that, it will still need approval and a signature by the Gov. So still a ways to go before this is law.

The MI House has passed HB 5797 to give additional forgiven days/hours of instruction to a large number of districts. The bill covers districts that were subject to two different state emergency declarations and/or cancelled school during mid-March weather events. #miched

House Education and Workforce Committee is meeting today to hear testimony on 3 different bills. First, HB 5480 would require districts to accept transfer students if the requesting student was suffering from unresolved bullying in their resident district. #miched (1/3)
