Some more on the new social housing legislation the minister is referring to TLDR: they made things worse,
Immigration to Welfare: Did you know the Govt passed a new Social Housing law this summer ? “The Housing and Residential Tenancies Act 2026” This Act sets the rules for asylum seekers’ access to social housing To qualify for social housing you must be “lawfully resident” and “habitually resident” in Ireland. “lawfully resident” includes: • Refugee status • Subsidiary protection • Permission to remain • Programme refugee status • Certain qualifying family permissions So once someone moves from being an asylum applicant, they have an immediate legal gateway to the social housing list. Social housing is NOT for citizens only. And To be clear: Until this summer, the rules governing migrants’ access to social housing were largely contained in a Departmental circular from 2012. The Govt has now written them directly into law. This was a chance to tighten up access to social benefits. Remember the Govt admit most are “economic migrants” But Instead they have doubled down. This directly affects the housing crisis. It puts new arrivals in direct competition with with disability campaigners & others for housing resources. Why are they doing this?

The demographic make-up of the continent is rapidly being changed by those driving fear, and so the acceptance of solutions. None of this is organic or spontaneous. Millions of people are on the move either driven by imposed horror at home or drawn by the promise of benefit.

The Govt have decided to raise minimum wage by 5.6% You have no idea how much additional costs this adds to businesses. It’s not just the wage increase itself. It’s the extra 13% on top when you include PRSI & pensions. A business must raise its prices to cover this, but also add on the additional VAT costs too!! Running a small businesses is becoming impossible. Below I break this all down in more detail 👇🏻
Cost of Living: One of the biggest drivers to the cost of living is the rapidly rising cost of employment. Ireland’s min-wage looks set to rise in the next budget by 5.6% to €14.94 or €31,080 annually. But the true cost of this to a business is €35,100 per employee after PRSI of 11.4% and 1.5% pension auto-enrolment. This is all before annual-leave cover, insurance, training, uniforms, equipment, rates, tolls, and sick leave etc. If the proposed min-wage increase goes ahead, the basic cost of employing a worker will be roughly 50% higher than it was in 2020!! This is not sustainable.... Especially when businesses are also absorbing higher energy, fuel and financing costs. In order to be able to afford a minimum wage employee costs of €35,100, a businesses must then generate that money through VAT-inclusive customer sales: So if the business' VAT is 23% that means €43,173 in customer sales. or if the VAT rate is 13.5% that means €39,839 in customer sales. This all assumes 100% margin. A typical café trying to keep wages at 30–35% of sales may need ~€128,000 in customer spending to support just one minimum-wage position. So expect €5 coffees and €10 pints. Businesses cannot continually absorb these increases: they eventually either raise prices, reduce staffing or close. The worst thing about all this is that very little of these extra costs actually go to the worker in take home pay..... its mostly all tax!!!

Louth is Ireland’s smallest county, in the middle of a housing crisis that has dragged on for more than a decade. Yet 34% of its social-housing since 2020 went to non-Irish citizens — and that doesn’t include foreign-born people who have since become Irish citizens. Concerning.
