Interesting point I heard from a leading deep tech investor:
The best technology doesn’t always win by being the furthest ahead.
Deep tech founders often build products that are years beyond the status quo. But if the leap is too large, customers can struggle to understand, trust, or adopt it.
You have to be ahead of the market, just not too far ahead that the market can’t follow.
I know 1 minute demos are very limited, but making a big point ab where the team went to school n how cracked everyone is is not differentiated...everyone is smart...u got into an accelerator in the first place.
Put the school logo and get to how PAINFUL the problem is!!
Spending the day at a16z @speedrun Demo Day.
Excited to listen for what's exceptionally hard to build.
Especially in physical AI and industrial software.
Looking for a small office space in SF.
800-2,000 sq ft. Ideally Jackson Square, South Park, or FiDi.
Team needs a home in SF alongside the Menlo office.
If you have space or know someone subleasing, reply or DM me!
Had two pitches today; two totally different products, but the same complaint underneath.
AI made teams faster at making stuff: code, docs, prototypes
It didn't make them better at picking what to build.
Curious if anyone's actually seen that part get easier.
Great few days in Carmel at @alphaclub Founders’ summit!
Shout out @CrosslinkCap team for helping host and to the awesome founders, investors, and operators who joined in the fun!!!
My automated sourcing workflow:
- Evertrace sends 300 founders to OpenAI
- OpenAI ranks the founders based on Crosslink's thesis
- Top 5 are sent to me in slack and added to our CRM
- Outreach through LinkedIn - I never ask for a meeting when first connecting
~80% hit rate
I started my career in VC.
Hyper-conscious of my lack of experience, I’ve made a point to never give founders company advice.
Serendipitously, every awesome founder I’ve met just wants a VC to get the hell out of their way.
If you’re a founder, engineer, VC, involved in startups or just want to hang out, you should come by :)
Excited to host our first dinner soon - reach out if interested!
In my head there are two types of the pitch decks:
1. The Teaser: barely anything on the slides, nice looking, punchy sentences
2. The Dictionary: dense slides, lots of info, fleshes out most questions
No preference, just don't be in between.
Most of my best meetings lately haven't been "AI for X."
It's founders live inside a boring industry and are rebuilding one painful workflow or component
Manufacturing, construction, logistics, power electronics, chemicals
If you're building in a legacy vertical - let's talk!
