BIG NEWS! I am thrilled to announce that starting Jan 2023 I will be an Assistant Professor in the Dept of Bio & Marine Bio at UNCW @UNCW_BaMB My lab will focus on community/functional/macro ecology and conservation of marine fishes. So grateful to everyone who helped me get here
Species traits demonstrate how macroalgal decline impacts temperate reef function. Integrating trait data across macroalgae and sessile invertebrates offers clearer insight into reef dynamics demonstrating utility of a unified epibenthic traits.

New paper in @NatureEcoEvo led by @FlandrinU shows that while marine protected areas do indeed enhance ecosystem services, they only marginally offset the negative impacts of long-term human exploitation

Check out our new paper, led by Liam MacNeil, showing trait convergence under similar environmental conditions in demersal fish assemblages across the Northern Hemisphere

Check out our new paper in GEC showing how ecological traits can be used to rank conservation priorities for fish species within the same IUCN categories. Priorities for threatened species can change importantly based on conservation goals.

🌈 Aesthetic value is driven by changes in temperature, productivity, habitat and human impacts
🐠 MPAs boost beauty though increasing taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity
🏝️ Tropical countries have the greatest potential benefits
🚨NEW IN @PNASNews🚨
We evaluated the distribution and drivers of aesthetic value in reef fish assemblages worldwide! MPAs enhance aesthetic value and tropical developing countries have the greatest potential conservation benefits!

For the new kids in back: If you hate statistics, you'll love my free lectures. Putting science before statistics, from basics of inference & causal modeling to multilevel models & dynamic state space models. It's all free, made with love and sympathy. youtube.com/playlist?list=PL…
I am so sick of reviewers hijacking my papers. Sure, I'll redo all the analyses with the model "you prefer" ...just quickly rewrite 1000s of lines of code and redo every figure for literally no change to results or conclusions...
A "crazy" admission - I fully proof read every email I send, usually twice, including the emails I sent to undergraduates in my classes and rejection emails I send to inquiring graduate students. Every inquiry deserves your genuine communication...
Excited to share! CONGRATULATIONS! Dr. Bradley Tolar @Tolarchaeota, UNCW BAMB, is the principle-investigator on a $1.5M Grant Award for Coastal Research to lead the TEAL-SHIPS Transect Expedition! Learn more about his Co-PIs and collaborators.

Headed to the North Sea International Bottom Trawl Survey with my PhD student @sci_gonzalez to collect fish specimens for his @NSF funded project on ecosystem functioning
Probably my biggest ever gesture as an advisor - in just 2 days, spent 6 hours underwater in a 15C lake (with 2C air temp!) so that my student could finish training dives and join a research trip to Belize. Didn't have a dry suit on day 1...
