Today, I met with some of the families of extrajudicial killings (EJK) victims of Duterte’s war on drugs. The families shared their stories about what happened, what happened since and what remains to be resolved. ‘Yung isang myembro ng pamilya na nakilala at nakausap ko ay nanay ng dalawang biktima ng EJK, si nanay Sarah Celiz. Ni share niya ang kanilang karanasan at ang nasapit ng kanyang mga mga anak. Her sons Almon and Dicklie were killed in 2017, SIX months apart, during Duterte’s deadly war. Her area sa Bagong Silang, Caloocan, a poor district of Metro Manila, was one of the worst affected. Almon, 32, a father of five, was killed when a police taskforce arrived at a wake he was attending. Hindi si Almon ang target ng taskforce pero binaril pa rin siya kahit na nakataas na ang dalawa niyang kamay. Six months after Almon’s killing, Dicklie, 31, his younger brother, a father of seven, was also killed. Pauwi si Dicklie noon at may daladalang gatas at pagkain para sa kanyang pamilya ng tinawag siya ng taskforce. Kinapkapan siya ngunit at tanging nakita lamang sa kanya ay ang bitbit na gatas at pagkain. The he had been out on a tricycle, a bag was placed over his head and he was taken to a police station. Nanay Celiz found his body only the following day, at a funeral parlour. Ang masaklap pa ang funeral parlour na ‘yun ay pag-aari ng isa sa mga police na dumukot sa anak niya. After the death of her two sons, she now has to suddenly support and raise 12 orphaned grandchildren. Even with this hardship, Nanay Celiz became one of the prominent voices speaking out for justice for the EJK victims. When we asked what they will consider as justice, the families responded in unison that they demand the trial, conviction, and imprisonment of Rodrigo Duterte and other responsible state actors. They also mentioned that wala na dapat Duterte ang mamuno sa bansa. Rodrigo Duterte’s trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague is scheduled to open on November 30, 2026. While the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is ongoing (The Senate impeachment court adjourned temporarily and is scheduled to resume on November 9, 2026) #JusticeForEJKVictims #NeverAgain #NeverForget
