The way Sonic characters comedic expressions are handled should be exaggerating expressions said character would already make in comedic situations
Riders is the greatest example of utilizing comedy in the series in my opinion and how they handle animation is no exception

I don't doubt that the way it's animated and rendered have some fault in how bad this model looks, but I maintain that's not entirely the case when simpler renders look better due to simple design details
Im praying for the day people realize that 90% of the issues with modern sonic is that he's poorly animated, not that hes a bad model.
Look at the pre-rendered cutscenes for Unleashed, Gens, and Colors. He looks amazing.
