The reverse is the case actually. UCL was never ever the determining factor in ballon d'or. That started with CR7. World Cup always took precedence (98 Zidane, 02 de Lima, 06 Cannavaro). In fact, it was even Messi that won for what you believe in (2010).

Wrong. Paulo Rossi won it in 82 for that reason. He played just 3 games for Juventus over the course of the season prior to the world cup. Lothar Matthaus won it in 1990 purely because of the world cup. And R9 played only 16 games for Inter prior to winning the world cup in 2002.
