Agree! Watch for suspicious looking amaranths this time of year as well! Palmer will have females with sharp spines on the inflorescences, and longer, thicker inflorescences than waterhemp!

Tis the season for winter annual germination with every new rainfall event. This field has a growing common chickweed population. Fall herbicide applications after harvest can be a good way to get ahead of these issues if you can’t get to them in the spring! #ISUCrops

R5 is a great time to walk through corn fields: ☑️ check out disease pressure on various hybrids, fungicide treatments, etc. ☑️ make yield estimates ☑️ check for crown rot and stalk rot that might require harvest adjustments ☑️ make notes on weed pressure for 2027

This August has been exceptionally boring from the foliar disease front in corn. While I can find a little of many diseases in fields and small pockets with heavier pressure, most have very clean canopies with <1% disease coverage on ear leaves and above. #ISUCrops

Giant ragweed is a bit of a menace on field edges and a brewing problem for adjacent crop fields. This plant still has very immature seed and could be pulled/cut to reduce seed production this fall. Never too late to try to do some weed management! #ISUCrops

Seeing the same in central IA! I agree with Rebecca - do your due diligence to confirm it is SDS and not something else like red crown rot!

Seeing more soybean fields with pockets of SDS showing up. Now that Red Crown Rot has been confirmed in southeast Iowa, I encourage you to double check those spots are SDS and not Red Crown Rot since the foliar symptoms are basically the same 🔗 crops.extension.iastate.edu/…

Red crown rot confirmed in Iowa: crops.extension.iastate.edu/…. For this season, there is nothing to be done from a management standpoint. However, confirming “SDS patches” are actually SDS will be important for making management decisions in future years. @ISUCropNews @IowaSoybeans
