Aged 18, I spent the summer of 1963 in the US. It seemed light years ahead of boring old Britain. Now I read of attempts to put a Tennessee woman to death with outdated drugs. In hospital afterwards she is handcuffed and chained to a bed. I love the US, but advanced it isn’t.

Education is SOOOOOOOOO IMPORTANT. Degrees. Licenses. Certs. Training programs. Late nights and early morning studying. Weekend and night school. Doesn’t matter what it takes. JUST DO IT.

I visit schools all the time and I can confirm 100% of teachers are brainwashing kids with these radical political views: • Racism is bad • Discriminating against disabled people is wrong • Hitler and the Nazis were the baddies • Bullying isn't a personality trait • Making your work anonymous isn't helpful Dangerous stuff.

The key point is to recognize that the more you care for others the greater will be your own sense of peace. It's quite clear that where there is less kindness in the world, there are more problems. When we talk about love, kindness and compassion, it's not a religious matter. It's part of the fundamental reality of relations among social creatures.

A Customs Union tackles only part of the damage. What about services? What about working across Europe? What about British businesses being able to recruit and operate freely? What about investment? Goods, services, people and capital. We need all four freedoms back.

What is it about the political right that they feel this constant need to invent imaginary demons to pretend to slay?
Today I’ll set out my pledge to parents, to keep politics out of the classroom. Parents should not have to worry about political activism seeping into lessons; it erodes standards and pollutes minds. Under us it wouldn’t happen.

This is what Brexit has done to Britain. Luise Valentiner arrived in Scotland through Erasmus and made it her home for 32 years. She built a business, paid taxes and became part of her community. Before Brexit, 85% of her sales went to EU customers. Then came customs charges, returned parcels and regulations too costly for a sole trader to navigate. After three decades here, she was also forced repeatedly to prove her right to return to her own home. Add growing xenophobia and the rise of Reform, and she and her husband have finally had enough. They are leaving Scotland for Denmark. Luise has not fallen out of love with Scotland. Brexit has made living and belonging here economically, practically and emotionally exhausting. Britain is losing businesses, skills, friendships and people who enriched this country for decades. Brexit is national self-harm.

Brexit didn’t just change our relationship with Europe. It changed what an ordinary British person was allowed to imagine doing with their life. Study in Prague. Work in Paris. Retire in Spain. Fall in love in Rome. Start a business in Berlin. Freedom of Movement made Europe ours too.

Freedom of Movement is not a “youth” issue. It matters when you’re 20, 40, 60 or 80. Study. Work. Business. Family. Retirement. The freedom to build a life across Europe should not come with an arbitrary age cut-off.

I’m no supporter of Donald Trump, but I’ll give him this: he’s held up a mirror to society and revealed just how many people put hatred, bigotry, and self-interest above compassion and decency. What shocks me most is how many now wear it proudly.

Hmmm 🤔
In 1967 Britain had more electric vehicles on its roads than every other country on earth put together, and they were all delivering milk. There were tens of thousands of them. The milk float: open sided, battery under the floor, top speed of about 15 miles an hour, and a whine you could pick out in your sleep. It was charged overnight at the depot and was back there by lunchtime. It carried glass bottles. Each one was collected from your step the next morning, washed and refilled. A bottle went round like that 20 or 30 times before it broke. The foil cap went for scrap. There was no other packaging. The milk had come from farms within a few miles, through a local dairy, and was on the step before 7. So here is what the country had. A zero-emission delivery fleet. Reusable containers with a return rate any modern scheme would kill for. No plastic. A supply chain you could cycle the length of. A man who noticed if an old lady's bottles were piling up, and knocked. It was dismantled in about 15 years, because a supermarket could sell milk a few pence cheaper in a plastic jug as a way of getting you through the door. Every piece of that system is now the subject of a government target for 2040. It was running in 1967, silently, in the dark, and nobody thought it was worth a mention.

We need to stop allowing Freedom of Movement to be framed only as immigration. For British people it meant 30 other countries in which we could live, work, study, build a business or retire. That is opportunity. And we should want it back.

Brexit didn’t just put barriers around Britain. It put barriers around British people. Where we can live. Where we can work. Where we can study. Where we can build a life. As Britain turns back towards Europe, removing those barriers should be a priority.
