Where TN, KY, and VA meet
It’s a day of anniversaries—the anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain, in a year when we’ve been celebrating the 250th anniversary of independence. So here’s an anniversary Kings Mountain monument, dedicated in 1880 on the battle’s centennial.

HUZZAH!
NEW FROM CAPITOL HILL — In a major victory for the protection of America’s hallowed battlegrounds, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted unanimously to advance bills to extend the American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP), the nation’s most effective historic battlefield preservation grant program. The bipartisan legislation, which garnered overwhelming support from both parties, marks a major investment in protecting America’s hallowed ground as the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War. In June, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the ABPP Reauthorization Act with a 404-13 vote. Learn more: battlefields.org/news/senate…

In 1864 the Hollidays moved to Valdosta, where Doc’s mother died of tuberculosis. Doc himself would be diagnosed with the same disease not long after he started practicing dentistry.
John Henry “Doc” Holliday was baptized as an infant on March 21, 1852 at First Presbyterian Church in Griffin, Georgia. The church building is gone and it is now a fire station.

The Borders in West Knoxville was my favorite store ever, hands down. Could spend hours at a time on a single visit, and did.
Randomly got sad today remembering how Borders Books closed.

After the Rev War, Farragut settled in East TN. His son, a future admiral and Civil War hero, was born there.
#DidYouKnow that Jordi Ferragut Mesquida, better known as Jorge Farragut, was the only known Spanish volunteer who fought under the American flag in the Revolutionary War? At the start of the Revolutionary War, Farragut used his seafaring experience to support the South Carolina navy by delivering war supplies to Charleston, South Carolina, effectively arming Southern colonial armies for the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. In 1780, he became a foot soldier in Charleston and commanded a battery to protect the city from British capture until he was captured and taken prisoner. After his release, he rejoined the fight at Cowpens and Wilmington. #HispanicHeritageMonth battlefields.org/learn/biogr…

I’ve always thought it ironic that the word “Appalachia” has origins in Florida—a state where the only mountains you’ll find are Space, Splash, and Big Thunder.
Replying to @appodlachia

I don’t usually go in for the “kids these days” takes, but I once referred to Nebuchadnezzar while teaching a world history course and not one student knew what I was talking about.

FDNY Ladder Company 3 fire truck, damaged in the 9/11 attacks and now inside the @Sept11Memorial. Ladder 3’s losses were heavy. The attacks happened about the same time as shift change, and responders from both shifts went into the North Tower. May their names be everlasting.
