The rise in assaults reported in schools is concerning, but the figures need context.
We’ve seen a significant increase in SPiMS, growing complexity of need, and years of underinvestment in SEN provision, specialist places, staffing and school infrastructure. More need, without matching resources, was always going to create pressure.
At the same time, misogyny, bullying, threats and intimidation of staff in mainstream or special settings must face zero tolerance. Respect between pupils, parents and teachers is non-negotiable.
A Behaviour Tsar won’t fix what years of under-resourcing helped create. Investment in SEN support, specialist provision and early intervention would be a far better use of public funds.
Bad behaviour in schools is an increasing issue and has to be addressed, Northern Ireland's new school behaviour tsar has said.
