Doom porn sells.
Is AI going to kill us? That was the big media igniter in the form of a tweet, currently at +160M views.
In the last 20 yrs, we’ve had our fair share of human extinction claims.
Quick recap:
➡️ 2000: Y2K (I still remember changing the date on my desktop)
➡️ 2012: End of the Mayan calendar.
➡️ 2014: Musk said that AI is the biggest existential threat to humanity. Then he founded OpenAI. Left. Founded xAI, and built Grok.
➡️ 2014: Stephen Hawking said that AI could mean the end of the human race.
➡️ 2023: Altman (OpenAI) and Amodei (Anthropic) stated that the risk of extinction by AI must be a priority, right there with nuclear wars. The week after, they launched more potent models.
➡️ 2023: Musk, with 30K signatures, requested a pause on AI training beyond GPT-4. Two months later, launched Grok.
➡️ 2026: In Jan, Dario Amodei (Anthropic) delivered his 38-page essay stating that we (humanity) are close to real danger. Then he launched two new models and prepared for an IPO.
➡️ 2026 (this week): Coxon states that AI could kill us by 2030.
SO...is AI going to kill us? Who knows.
What I'm certain is that the biggest risk is that ALL decisions being made around AI, are made by fewer people than the attendees at your most boring weekly meeting.
8 billion people affected by the decisions of a bunch of guys who like to play God and (very likely but unconfirmed) crave the popularity they lacked at school.
It is ridiculous and scary.
These people represent the biggest contradiction of our era.
Should you be worried? I am...but not about extinction.
I am worried about a big orchestrated collapse. I do think there is a latent possibility of attacks that will infiltrate systems in ways we have not seen before. (i.e. Hugging Face -the world’s largest open-source AI platform - was recently breached by a swarm of autonomous agents…and very few pple are talking about it)
Now think of the vast majority of infra that runs the world.
Think money, votes, health, public services, airspace control, maritime traffic, logistics, etc.
Everywhere you turn your head, you can find infra that is not ready for this sort of scenario…and very unlikely that they will ever be.
🍒 The cherry on top: Where is the government? Where is the sense of urgency to find out if the risk is real and to intervene as they ought to? The policy we see... is that there is no policy.
So is AI going to kill us? Who knows.
It could also just ignore us.
We are very familiar with how that works… it’s the status quo of corporations that only consider the well-being of their shareholders.
Oh wait.
OpenAI and Anthropic are going public.
Shit.
