The darkest political instinct isn’t anger. It’s the secret (or not so secret) pleasure people take in imagining their enemies ruined. Once politics teaches you to hate your neighbor more than you fear national collapse, the ideology has already eaten the citizen. Civilizations don’t collapse when everyone becomes evil. They collapse when enough decent people become exhausted, cynical, and unwilling to defend anything.
