Of course Miles Davis is one of the best, but he has never given me the feeling of awe that John Coltrane has. Or even that Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Pharoah Sanders have. I love a lot of Miles Davis records but so far none of them have felt like a proof of god or something

I have it on good authority that when Harold Bloom was on his deathbed he finally came around to the literary grandeur of Harry Potter. He intoned the words “I solemnly swear I am up to no good” as if they were the shahada, and then with one final satisfied sigh he was gone 🕊️
Someone called me pretentious the other day for saying I read JK Rowling when I was 43, and that got me thinking—why have we created a culture where engaging deeply with ideas and challenging yourself is considered pretentious?

🚨 BREAKING: A Palestine Action terrorist is on the run having been released from custody for his brother’s wedding. He has not returned and may have left the country.
• Self-proclaimed communist Sean Middlebrough, 34, of Liverpool, was one of eight accused of organising the 6 August 2024 raid on Elbit Systems at Filton, near Bristol.
• He was the only one convicted in that trial. The jury could not agree on the other seven. Their retrial is listed for June 2028.
• He was granted three days’ leave from custody for the wedding during the trial period and did not come back (who could have guessed that would happen?)
