If the allegations in this FBI-document battle are accurate, Tinubu has walked straight into a legal minefield of his own making.
1. The "private citizen" argument: He allegedly told a federal judge that he was not an elected public official during the relevant 1992–1993 period and therefore deserved private-citizen treatment. If records establish otherwise, that argument doesn’t merely collapse, it detonates.
2. The Privacy Act gambit: The argument reportedly invokes protections tied to U.S. citizenship. If he is not an American citizen, then what exactly is the legal foundation for invoking that protection?
And here is the elephant in the room: lying to a federal judge is not political theatre. Courts are not campaign rallies where facts can be massaged until they fit the narrative. If deliberate falsehoods were submitted, the consequences could be serious.
This same man has contradictions surrounding his educational history, public biography and other biographical claims. When the foundation keeps shifting, people are entitled to ask whether they are looking at a house built on sand.
As the proverb goes, "A lie has many versions, but the truth has only one."
If these allegations survive scrutiny, the problem won’t be who pulled the pin...it will be that the grenade was allegedly handed to the court in the first place.
When you build your defence on questionable facts, you don’t need an enemy to bring you down. Your own paperwork can do the job.
