Big News: Margelo has been acquired by @callstackio for over EUR 20 million. 🥳 I founded Margelo 5 years ago, knowing nothing about business - I actually dropped out of economics university after 3 days. We built our reputation for high-end performance software through open-source libraries like VisionCamera (40M downloads) and react-native-mmkv (67M downloads), and quickly landed high-profile clients like Discord, Coinbase, Expensify and VSCO. Two years ago we doubled down on mobile architecture with Nitro (34M downloads), which gained rapid adoption in the community and allowed us to bring even more ideas to life. I’ve been friends with Mike from Callstack for a long time, which makes me even more excited to remain a significant shareholder and bring mobile technology to a whole new level. I'd like to thank my team for shaping Margelo into what it is today. ❤️
🎉 @margelo_com Joins Callstack to Advance High-Performance React Native Engineering Vienna, Austria. 1 September 2026. Callstack, a leader in React Native and cross-platform development, today announced that Margelo, the Vienna-based high-end engineering company behind Nitro Modules, VisionCamera and react-native-mmkv, is joining Callstack in a transaction valuing Margelo at more than EUR 20 million. Margelo builds high-performance technology for React Native. Nitro Modules (34M downloads) lets developers write fast, type-safe native modules in C++, Swift or Kotlin, and quickly gained widespread traction across the ecosystem. VisionCamera (40M downloads), Margelo's enterprise-grade open-source Camera framework and react-native-mmkv (67M downloads), a key-value storage library, power countless React Native apps today. Callstack has spent a decade helping large organizations adopt, scale and operate React Native, contributing to the framework and its open-source ecosystem along the way. Together, the two teams give clients the strongest React Native performance expertise in the market, backed by delivery proven in complex enterprise environments. Margelo's technology and Callstack's delivery experience will now be available to the same clients. The timing reflects a fundamental change in how software is built. AI is making implementation faster and cheaper, but architecture, performance, native integration, validation and release safety are becoming more important, not less. These are the fundamentals on which both companies have built their reputations and on which they will continue to build together. "Margelo has built some of the strongest performance technology in React Native. Callstack has spent a decade helping large organizations adopt and scale the framework. Bringing those strengths together gives us the team and reach to solve more of the hard problems that determine whether software succeeds in production," said Mike Grabowski, CEO and Founder of Callstack. "At Margelo, we’ve built high-performance technology that developers already rely on. We’re excited to partner with Callstack to bring it to more clients and scale its impact. As software development becomes increasingly agentic, we want that technology to provide the foundation teams need to build reliable software with agents," said Marc Rousavy, CEO and Founder of Margelo. Margelo's existing open-source libraries will remain open source. Marc will continue to lead their development and help shape the combined company's offering. The transaction follows Callstack's 2025 growth investment and supports its strategy to expand technology and open-source capabilities while growing internationally.

Swift can now convert Swift closures to 𝚜𝚝𝚍::𝚏𝚞𝚗𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗s. It's very simple in theory; the Swift closure is passed to C++ as a 𝚟𝚘𝚒𝚍* that will be called with a little bit of ptr magic (𝚜𝚠𝚒𝚏𝚝𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕). The closure's capture context (aka any values from "outside" the closure that are used "inside" the closure) is also a 𝚟𝚘𝚒𝚍* that will just be passed along. This is almost exactly how you would bridge a closure/stateful function over to C, with the difference being that in C you would also need a 𝚏𝚛𝚎𝚎(..) function - here we use 𝚜𝚠𝚒𝚏𝚝_𝚛𝚎𝚕𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚎(..) github.com/mrousavy/swift/bl…

if you build the Swift compiler, the repo is 1+TB in size

..technically it's sparse files that are allocated, so it's not really 1TB - but it's still around 120GB of actual data

I want to bring C++ exceptions to Swift. My proposal is to add a new 𝚂𝚆𝙸𝙵𝚃_𝚃𝙷𝚁𝙾𝚆𝚂 annotation to C++ methods, which imports them as 𝚝𝚑𝚛𝚘𝚠𝚜 in Swift. The 𝚜𝚝𝚍::𝚎𝚡𝚌𝚎𝚙𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗::𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝() will be copied into Swift to represent a Swift 𝙴𝚛𝚛𝚘𝚛 - fully on-stack. With the newly proposed compiler option -𝚌𝚡𝚡-𝚎𝚡𝚌𝚎𝚙𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗-𝚖𝚘𝚍𝚎=𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚒𝚌𝚝, every C++ method that is not marked 𝚗𝚘𝚎𝚡𝚌𝚎𝚙𝚝 will be imported as 𝚝𝚑𝚛𝚘𝚠𝚜 in Swift - no 𝚂𝚆𝙸𝙵𝚃_𝚃𝙷𝚁𝙾𝚆𝚂 needed. This highlights why Swift's explicit 𝚝𝚑𝚛𝚘𝚠𝚜 requirement is a better language design decision than C++'s implicit "everything can throw". It's interesting that C++ exceptions are zero overhead if they are not throwing, while Swift is - because it essentially wraps everything that can throw in a 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚞𝚕𝚝<𝚃>. forums.swift.org/t/handling-…

Last week: my first Nitro module. This week: it's a VisionCamera 5 output. 📡 <Camera outputs={[stream.cameraOutput]} /> That's it. Your VisionCamera app can now go live on YouTube, Twitch or any RTMP/RTMPS server. github.com/bhyoo99/react-nat…
Built my first package with Nitro Modules! 🔥 react-native-nitro-rtmp: RTMP/RTMPS live streaming for React Native. Camera, mic, overlays. Video frames never touch JS. Thanks @mrousavy, @margelo_com(@callstackio) for building Nitro! github.com/bhyoo99/react-nat…

Fun optimization: when you open an app on an iPhone, the OS has a hardcoded check for if it’s the camera app, and if so, grants it its own special memory pool (“secluded memory”) for faster start up times: github.com/apple-oss-distrib…

genuinely impressive
Prototyped a Swift interpreter that runs native, fully interactive iOS apps directly from a .swift file

We recently experimented with moving Nitro to Hermes APIs directly, instead of the higher level JSI APIs... 🧪 In 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚌𝚝-𝚗𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚟𝚎-𝚖𝚖𝚔𝚟, one of the most popular Nitro Modules, we saw almost 𝟮𝘅 faster performance! 🤯

The craziest part is that - thanks to Nitro - this might not even be a breaking change! We just switched the underlying 𝙹𝚂𝙸𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚝𝚎𝚛<𝚃> (left) to our new 𝙷𝚎𝚛𝚖𝚎𝚜𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚝𝚎𝚛<𝚃> (right); no code in 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚌𝚝-𝚗𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚟𝚎-𝚖𝚖𝚔𝚟 was changed! 🔥

Love to see it - VisionCamera in matrix
Rewatched The Matrix. My brain said "great film", my hands said "let's go" 😂 Live camera turned into Matrix code — 120 fps, smooth on iPhone. Built with Expo + VisionCamera + WebGPU. Thanks @mrousavy @wcandillon @expo

We're going full circle
I've seen people describe Jev as an "AI if statement". But what if it actually WAS an if statement? Introducing Probably: a programming language powered by Jev: probably-lang.southpolesteve… Jev baked into the language. “feels” asks a question. “match” routes between descriptions. “while” keeps going until something stops feeling true. This is obviously a toy, but it's fun to think about what something like Jev unlocks. Jev makes the decisions, an LLM does the writing, and a little program ties it together.

I just built 𝙻𝚊𝚣𝚢𝙹𝚂𝙾𝙽: a Nitro type that parses & stringifies JSON on a small background 𝚓𝚜𝚒::𝚁𝚞𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚖𝚎, and then transfers the object using the new 𝚓𝚜𝚒::𝙸𝚂𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚣𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 interface. ⚡️ It essentially makes 𝙹𝚂𝙾𝙽.𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚜𝚎(…) async, reducing JS blocking time by ~33% for anything that returns or accepts JSON in Nitro.
