Okay folks, let's take a mile-high look at THIS $5,000 DIVIDEND IDEA.
I think people are getting worked up in both directions before anyone's really thought it through.
Here's the reality. A President can propose just about anything, and this one is a big, splashy proposal. But between a proposal and a check landing in your mailbox, there's a long road.
It's worth understanding that road before we treat this as a done deal.
The President says it'll be paid for with tariffs. The catch is that the Supreme Court recently knocked down most of the big tariffs, so that revenue is going to drop off a lot.
Which means realistically, if this ever happened, it wouldn't come from tariffs. It'd come out of the budget.
Now before anyone panics about that, remember something. Money put back in people's pockets doesn't just vanish.
It gets spent here at home. It lifts American businesses. And a real chunk of it comes back to the government through taxes and economic activity.
It's not free. But it's not a straight trillion-dollar hole either. That nuance always gets lost.
Then there's the simple fact that Congress actually has to pass it, which is never a given, even with our own majorities.
Big spending promises have a way of looking a lot smaller once they hit the reality of the Senate.
So here's my honest take. I'm not going to hype it, and I'm not going to trash it. It's an idea.
It may change five times before it ever becomes anything, and it may never become anything at all.
What I'd rather focus on is the stuff that actually wins. The border. Safe streets. Jobs. An economy that's working.
We don't need a check to make that case.
Keep a level head on this one. Time will tell.
