There are at least 5 possible scenarios for the "pacing the frontier":
1. ECONOMIC - Anthropic's soon to be released S-1 SEC filing would reveal the challenging economic realities of abundant cheap open source (primarily Chinese) AI and that the largest line item they could trim were training costs.
2. SAFETY - we take @DarioAmodei, @sama, and @elonmusk at their word and this is the primary driver. It is logically possible that something in the last 2-3 days occurred safety wise that made all three of them say, 'let's slow this down.'
3. COMBINATION OF 1 & 2
4. GOOGLE DEEPMIND HAS RSI - the rumors that the GDM team has hit recursive self improvement are true and this creates incentives for competitors to slow things down.
5. PERMUTATION AND/OR COMBINATION OF 1/2/4
All of these scenarios are logically possible. I am most inclined to scenarios 1 or 3 for the reasons that I enumerate here in this essay I wrote exactly a month ago today:

I think our technological future will have both dystopian and utopian elements to it simultaneously. This makes it hard to talk calmly and rationally about the subject when opinions run hot.
This week's piece focuses on the question I get privately the most - "how concerned should I be about AI (tail) risks?"
Very few like to talk about this question publicly because there can be a taboo about evaluating what has historically only been explored in science fiction. Most of the scenarios I have the greatest concerns about deal with human cognition and literacy in an era where I think people read and write less. However, I will cover the sci-fi stuff too.

I would strongly urge the @WSJ to reconsider their stance on knowingly publishing fully AI-written content.
It breaks the social contract between the reader and the institution.
It is a race to the bottom.
Please reconsider.

I think this is a mistake by the WSJ & I’m surprised by the move.
The standard here is subjective & I’m not sure by what standard they will ever be able to reject some AI & not others.
It also does significant damage to the trust of WSJ readers who expect human authorship.
In a statement, WSJ opinion editor Paul Gigot defends Druckenmiller's use of AI to write Monday's op ed, saying "AI is a fact of modern life," and "nobody can doubt that his op-ed is his genuine opinion."
