“Don't think for a second that because you are an alarmist that you are doing a social good.” This sentence is just devastating for so many intellectuals who need everybody to presume that they’re “the good people” Thank goodness we have Jensen!

Jensen's net worth depends on the gullibility of people like you. He knows he's lying about AI risks, but he's fairly good at it, so it's easy to persuade people who never thought about AI risks until a few weeks ago.

I'm a younger guy, but I read the Bostrom book a decade ago as a teenager, and I'm fairly well versed in the arguments. I think I'd score highly on the pro-X-risk side of a debate. I'm just not persuaded, sorry. 'Motivated by money' seems like a weak model for Jensen's behavior. I think you can do better. Power, maybe? But is there anything about this man to suggest he cares that much about money? I think maybe what people are struggling with is that Jensen has an actual worldview that is totally at odds with the political and intellectual establishment of the world. He thumbs his finger at consensus and has balls of steel, as several interviewers have learned recently. This makes him a big inconvenience for the people trying to get us to start a nuclear war with China, or turn off our industrial infrastructure, or both.

With all due respect, if the people building a technology say it's dangerous, and the people selling it say it's safe, consider that perhaps the engineers and scientists most familiar with how it works may be more credible than the salesmen who say "just program it to be good" without understanding why that doesn't make any sense.

But the corollary turns out to be more robust. Don’t think for a second that because you’ve made a lot of money and have a lot of money you’ve done something good for society.

“Don't think for a second that because you are an alarmist that you are doing a social good.” Wise words and applies also to so many things other than AI alarmism.

Good point, there aren't any examples of alarmists doing a social good like Winston Churchill for instance.

The underlying point is that alarmism can have ill effects, which is of course true. But he needs a much stronger claim to be true, that the alarm some are feeling isn't rationally justified. He makes a weak point that doesn't actually help his argument, and sounds clueless.

His rhetoric is a dead end: "Do YOU think you are doing social good by beeing a denialist?" Having a mix of neurotic and optimistic people helped us survive/thrive as a species. With RSI survival takes precedence until risk can be properly assessed and adressed.

The only reason people are listening to Jensen is because he is rich and happens to be CEO of NVIDIA. If he was just this dude, no one would listen to his drivel.

AI is a tool that can be programmed with net good and bad objectives. If it is distributed (not centralized), as new technologies generally have been, then good will triumph over bad evil.

I'm sure all 9 of the people who think alarmism is always good were utterly owned by this quote. Sometimes, in life, you have good reason to be alarmed. Seeing hundreds of billions being spent to make a barely controllable machine that is smarter than humanity is one such time.

He is also ... out of date. People CURRENTLY cannot get a job. AI is causing insurmountable issues even at this level. The climate anxiety plus the AI anxiety are diservices to all of us yet both have ALREADY affected the reality of the trajectory we are on. Is it right/fair: no!
