Kaduna’s Youth Under Pressure: When Political Fear Meets State Power By Aliyu Halliru Wali There is something painfully ironic about Kaduna today. A government that came to power through the ballot box now appears increasingly uncomfortable with the very thing that brought it to power: political competition. Young people who criticise the APC-led administration, identify with the opposition or simply demand accountability are increasingly made to feel that political participation comes with a price. Is this confidence or fear? Look at what is happening to the young people of Kaduna. From reported arrests and intimidation of young political activists to the growing tension around opposition activities, a disturbing atmosphere is developing. Kafanchan has also become part of this conversation, following political violence surrounding opposition activities and the subsequent detention of opposition figures. For young people watching these events, the message can easily become: be careful who you support, be careful what you say, and be careful how loudly you say it. But democracy does not work that way. A young person is not a criminal because he carries the flag of another political party. He is not a criminal because he criticises the governor. He is not a criminal because he believes Kaduna deserves a different direction. And he certainly should not be treated as a threat simply because he refuses to clap for the government. Perhaps the APC-led government needs to understand something very simple: Kaduna is not a private political property. Governor Uba Sani @ubasanius is the governor of Kaduna, not the owner of Kaduna. The APC is the ruling party, not the ruling institution. Government House is an office, not a throne, and political power is borrowed from the people. If young people are asking questions, answer them. If they are criticising your policies, respond with results. If they are supporting the opposition, convince them with your performance. Do not intimidate them because they disagree with you. The young people of Kaduna are watching. They are watching how political gatherings are treated. They are watching how activists are treated. They are watching how security agencies respond when young people choose to stand with an opposition movement. And they are asking one very simple question: Are they afraid of the opposition momentum? If the APC is confident in its record, then there should be nothing to fear from young people carrying ADC flags. Let them organise. Let them speak. Let them campaign. Let them criticise. Let the people listen. And let the people decide. No government can silence an entire generation simply by creating an atmosphere of fear. You cannot arrest an idea. You cannot intimidate political consciousness out of young people. You cannot use pressure to manufacture genuine support. We will continue to participate in politics through every constitutional and lawful means available to us. We will organise peacefully, speak boldly and demand accountability. No amount of pressure, intimidation or political manoeuvring will stop us. Kaduna belongs to its people. Its young people have a voice. And that voice will not be silenced.

Ibrahim Fabulous who made a video days ago saying "if I go missing, hold Kaduna State Government responsible" has now been picked up by unknown operatives. We ask the Kaduna State Govt and security agencies: WHERE IS HE? You cannot silence everyone with abduction. Freedom of speech is a constitutional right. Intimidation, secret arrests and enforced disappearance have no place in a democracy. Cc: @AmnestyNigeria @amnesty @Abbahikima @OfficialDSSNG @dawisu @ubasanius @IsaAshiruKudan @atiku @MobilePunch

OPPOSITION IS NOT A CRIME,STOP THE ARREST OF YOUTHS Dear Governor @ubasanius , I write to you today as a concerned citizen to address a deeply troubling trend in Kaduna State: the increasing harassment, intimidation, and arrest of youths for expressing political opposition and exercising their constitutional right to free speech. Your Excellency, Nigeria is a constitutional democracy, and under our laws, political opposition is not a crime. The foundation of any healthy democracy relies on the freedom of citizens, especially the youth to voice their grievances, criticize government policies, and demand better governance without the fear of state-sponsored retaliation. Recent developments in Kaduna State paint a worrying picture of a shrinking civic space. Reports of youth leaders and social media commentators being arrested, detained, or threatened over political commentary or opposition affiliations undermine the very principles of justice and fairness you swore to uphold. Using security apparatuses to stifle dissent does not breed respect; it breeds fear, resentment, and deepens the divide between the government and the governed. True leadership is measured by its tolerance for criticism and its willingness to engage with dissenting voices. The energy, frustration, and critical feedback of Kaduna’s youths should be viewed as a call for constructive engagement and better opportunities, not as a threat to state security. I respectfully urge your administration to take the following steps: •Order the immediate release of all youths and political actors currently detained for peacefully expressing their political views or criticizing state policies. •Direct security agencies to stop the unlawful intimidation and disruption of peaceful opposition gatherings. •Foster open dialogue by creating constructive channels where youths can share their frustrations regarding insecurity, unemployment, and governance without fear of arrest. Governor Sani, you have previously demonstrated leadership by intervening in cases of unlawful detention. I appeal to that same sense of justice now. Please choose the path of democratic maturity over political persecution. Stop the arrests, engage the youth, and remember that a strong opposition is vital to the progress of Kaduna State. Yours sincerely A Concerned Citizen. Hauwa m Ahmad Convener Elrufai girls @ModibboSanusi @Safreenarrhh @Mr_Emmcap__ #OppositionIsNotACrime #StopYouthArrests #VoiceOfKadunaYouth

One among hundreds of stories of surviving a crackdown as a Kaduna APC critic: Salim Babajo (A Facebook influencer) For months, Salim has been one of the top critics of the Kaduna APC government, and because of this, he was added to the list of public enemies number one. He became one of the key voices calling out government failures across the entire Zaria senatorial zone. A few weeks back, Salim wrote on his page that his safety was at risk, as he was being tracked and monitored by authorities who wanted to arrest him. This was an alarm that should not have been met with silence. Measures should have been taken—such as issuing a public statement, filing a court restraining order, or providing a safe house for him. To my knowledge, none of this was done. Yesterday, while meeting with senior members regarding the arrest of 13 members from Kafanchan, one from Rigasa, and ten ADC members from Kudan, I received a report about Salim's situation. Salim sells power banks online, and his call was intercepted by a potential buyer who told him he would buy a large order once he restocked. That buyer was picked up by security personnel and forced to call Salim to bring the power banks. Luckily, Salim was sleeping and missed 30 calls. They later released the buyer, who then informed Salim of what had happened. Personally, I feel deeply unsafe knowing that state resources—which ought to be used to track dangerous bandits and secure Kaduna—are being used to track me or my team members. I saw a girl whose face was smashed with a stone by an APC thug. I saw a woman stabbed, and many young, innocent guys arrested. For most of these arrests, neither party leadership nor their actions secured their release; on some days, you simply have to call on family, friends, or associates who have favors or leverage with the APC or security agencies. A few weeks ago, I got intelligence that a hit was placed on one of our members—a young girl in her twenties. I got down on my knees in the middle of the night and prayed for her safety. Until you are looked in the eye and told, "You are a problem to us; if you don't go silent, we will lock you up or silence you by any means necessary..." Until a leader you respect is locked away for 7 months, or a respected religious leader in his 70s is arrested and still detained... Until then, you won't understand certain decisions. One of the ADC leaders in Jigawa was kidnapped along the Abuja–Kaduna highway on his way to pick up nomination forms from the ADC headquarters. He was a known thorn in the side of the powers that be in the state. Even after his ransom was paid, they still killed him. I still see his son every day been left with orphans

Innanillahi Wa inna ilaihir raji’un 💔 Last night there was an attack in Rahusa Estate, Millenium City, where bandits went away with more than four people. These banditry attacks have become a daily routine in Kaduna state, as if there’s no one in charge of the state’s affairs. May God Almighty give us leaders that truly care about the lives and properties of its people.

I hate the fact that someone will be out there trying to make a difference with his body and everything, and then, when he says he isn’t doing it anymore, some useless, foolish people who haven't tried anything will start forming opinions from their bedrooms.

Your voice is supposed to become louder when the political climate becomes uncomfortable, not disappear. You think Malam Aminu Kano, Sa’adu Zungur, Gambo Sawaba, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Ransome-Kuti, Aminu Kano, Balarabe Musa, Abubakar Rimi, Tanko Yakasai, Wole Soyinka, Gani Fawehinmi, Ikoku, Zik waited until it was safe before they challenged power? Almost all of these men were imprisoned because of their political activism at points of our nation's history. Gambo Sawaba a lady was repeatedly imprisoned for her activism. A true activist doesn’t wait for political opposition to become safe before doing what is RIGHT.

Standing with you on this tough but completely necessary call, brother. 🤝🏾 Politics is important, but no political cause is worth a person's life, safety, or freedom. It takes true leadership and immense courage to look at the bigger picture and say "safety first" especially when you’ve built something as massive and impactful as you have over the last three years. You’ve given your all, voluntarily, to champion leadership and youth inclusion in Kaduna. But when the environment becomes this dangerous and the institutional support isn't there to protect the very youth risks are being asked of, stepping back into an inactive mode is the only responsible choice. You owe no one apologies for protecting lives. Thank you for your sacrifice, your accountability, and for putting the well-being of thousands of young people above political optics. We stand with you, we respect this decision completely, and we pray for a safer atmosphere for everyone involved. #SafetyFirst #KadunaPolitics #youthInpolitics
NOTICE OF WITHDRAWAL FROM MAINSTREAM POLITICS DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS: THE SITUATION IN KADUNA AND THE SAFETY OF EL-RUFAI & ADC SUPPORTERS For accountability and posterity, I believe I owe everyone an explanation. Over the last three years, I have participated voluntarily in several political initiatives. I started with Rescue Kaduna, which many eventually left for APC; then SDP, where I helped form the SDP North-West Youth Movement. I later became part of the El-Rufai Media Team, which merged with El-Rufai Live, an opposition platform that has grown to generate about 16 million monthly engagements. I helped establish the Kaduna ADC Youth Wing, co-forged the Nasiriyya-Ashiru Youth Front, established media platforms, led Kaduna youth participation at the ADC convention, advocated for youth quota during the congress, participated in the screening of aspirants and sale of forms, and contributed to the emergence of two House of Representatives candidates and several State Assembly candidates. Everything we have done politically has been voluntary. Nobody forced or enticed us into it. We did it because we believed in a cause, in the leadership we followed, and because we believed APC had failed and that Nigeria and Kaduna deserve better leadership. It is therefore with a heavy heart that I announce my withdrawal from mainstream political activities due to growing safety concerns and the increasingly difficult environment for political participation in Kaduna, particularly for El-Rufai and ADC supporters. Over the past seven months, more than 50 of our members have been arrested and 20 injured. In every incident, no one from the party at the national or state level visited these victims at home or offered the support they deserved. Statements after each incident are not enough to prevent attacks or make ADC youth feel safe. At a bare minimum, the party can provide lawyers and press support whenever members are attacked, and leaders can sometimes lead solidarity protests. That is what parties facing repressive regimes at every level of government do. Even our leader could not secure a protest by ADC national leaders. APC appears willing to take advantage of this weakness and regain power. If ADC does not provide defence and safety, and continues to drag its feet, we may face a painful reality. I will remain a supporter of ADC candidates and, Insha Allah, vote during the polls. I will continue to monitor the affairs of the candidates we have supported and assist them in every possible and safest way. However, until safer conditions and a more secure atmosphere emerge, all El-Rufai youth groups under my coordination will go into inactive political mode. Any individual member who personally feels safe enough to continue participating in ADC activities remains free to make that decision independently. This is not directed at any single person, nor is it an attempt to blame an individual. I see this as an organisational concern. As a party and organisation, I have not seen sufficient plans, frameworks, attention or concrete measures directed towards the safety and protection of young El-Rufai and ADC supporters who are actively promoting the party and its candidates. I cannot continue encouraging thousands of young people to take risks when I cannot guarantee their safety or confidently tell them that adequate protection and support will be available if something goes wrong. To every young person who may feel hurt, disappointed or abandoned by this decision, I sincerely apologise. I am sorry. I am not capable of protecting everyone, and I will not give anyone a false sense of hope that help will certainly come when I cannot guarantee it. I sincerely appreciate Hafiz Beyro, Hon. Bello El-Rufai, Mukhtar Baloni, our Mummy Hajiya Hafsat Baba, Sardauna Matasa and Captain Jamil for continuing to look after Malam’s youths even in difficult circumstances. 1/2 @ADCNig @BolajiADC @atiku @IsaAshiruKudan @B_ELRUFAI @muktarbaloni
