I think the mistake was interpreting people bouncing from Marathon as rejection of the PvP game. The original game needed more maps, progression and work on matchmaking/onboarding. Instead it got solos, duos, more queues and now increasingly PvE.

The PvE direction is what finally made me stop playing. Marathon's PvE worked as part of PvPvE. On its own it is nowhere near deep enough to compete with actual PvE games. They had a very good, unusual PvP game with fixable problems and decided to turn it into something else.

Unpopular opinion. Sponsored Survival in Marathon S2 feels like it accidentally made the boring thing optimal. Boss farming PvE, salvaging everything, speedrunning Cradle. I like a lot of S2 changes. I just don’t want regular maps to become the inefficient way to play.

My team already doesn’t want to play regular maps. They prefer Sponsored Marsh and mass-salvage Armory purchases into cradle xp. Heck, they salvage everything from gold/unique guns to prestige salvage.
