LAWMA PUBLIC UPDATE: CLEAN-UP OF THE WASTE BLACKSPOT AT CARWASH BUS STOP, IYANA OWORO Alapere/Third Mainland Bridge Road, Kosofe 15 October 2026 LAWMA began clearing the waste blackspot at Carwash bus stop, Iyana Oworo, today. A heavy-duty excavator and tipper trucks are on site, loading and transporting the accumulated waste to approved disposal facilities. What we found Our inspection on 14 October found extensive waste deposits along the road median and drainage channel, extending beneath the overhead bridge. Many residents and motorists travelling this busy corridor will have noticed the build-up. The waste consists mainly of mixed household and commercial refuse, including nylon and sachet waste, plastic bottles, packaging materials and food waste. Preliminary findings indicate that dumping over a prolonged period turned the channel and median into an illegal disposal site. Our assessment points to indiscriminate and potentially organised dumping by waste collectors, traders, cart pushers and others bypassing approved disposal arrangements. Easy access and limited surveillance appear to have contributed to the accumulation. Investigation and enforcement We are working with the relevant enforcement agencies to investigate those suspected of bringing waste to this location, as well as anyone receiving, facilitating or permitting its disposal there. The investigation will establish responsibility and determine the appropriate sanctions under Lagos State environmental laws. Enforcement must follow the evidence. Completing the clearance Evacuation will continue until the entire affected stretch, including the drainage channel and the area beneath the bridge, has been cleared. The accompanying photographs show conditions before and during the operation. We will share completion photographs once evacuation is finished. Preventing a recurrence Removing the waste must go hand in hand with preventing its return. LAWMA will work with Kosofe officials to maintain regular monitoring and patrols, alongside stronger enforcement and prosecution of illegal dumpers. We will formally hand over the cleared site to the relevant authority, with clear responsibility for its continued protection and monitoring. We will also engage residents, traders and bus park operators on proper waste disposal and approved collection arrangements. Public cooperation Please use registered PSP operators and approved waste collection points. Do not dump refuse in drains, road medians or other public spaces. A drainage channel must remain available to carry water, not become a place to discard waste. Report waste blackspots and illegal dumping to LAWMA on 07080601020 or 08000052962 or email: info@lawma.gov.ng. We will continue identifying and clearing waste blackspots across Lagos. Sustaining that work requires reliable collection services, responsible disposal, consistent monitoring and enforcement.

A few days ago, I led the @Lawma_gov team to Ago Palace Way, Okota to continue our efforts to restore public order along that corridor. We sealed 25 buildings and made several arrests. A note of caution to recalcitrant traders, markets, and property owners on Ago Palace Way: DO NOT TEST OUR RESOLVE. #KeepLagosClean youtu.be/jKaX48XFsx0?si=4_xI… via @YouTube

Micheal James (male, 29) and Blessing Okafor (female, 55) were apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 October 2026, at Ago Palace Way, Okota, for allegedly dumping refuse on the road median. Road medians are not waste disposal points. Please bag your waste for collection by your assigned PSP operator. Keeping public spaces clean requires both responsible disposal and consistent enforcement. #KeepLagosClean #ZeroToleranceLagos

A few weeks ago, @Lawma_gov worked with @followlastma, @LAGESCOfficial, @rrslagos767, the Lagos State Taskforce and Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LSNC) to clear illegal trading from Mile 2 Bridge. Some traders subsequently returned to occupy the spaces we had cleared. Our Project WISE team has now gone back with KAI to remove them, as part of a follow-up enforcement operation around Mile 2 and Festac. Mile 2 Bridge serves people travelling across a busy part of Lagos. Trading on the bridge obstructs movement, creates avoidable risks and makes routine cleaning more difficult. It must remain available for its intended purpose. This return visit also speaks to a practical challenge in enforcement: a successful clearance can quickly be reversed without consistent follow-up. We have to judge the outcome by whether the location stays clear, not simply by what we remove on the day. Traders must operate ONLY in authorised locations. We will continue to work with our partner agencies to address reoccupation and keep these public spaces clear. @followlasg @jidesanwoolu @drobafemihamzat @tokunbo_wahab #KeepLagosClean

Ago Palace Way: clearing the backlog, preventing its return This morning, Sunday, 11 October 2026, I led a combined @Lawma_gov team to Ago Palace Way in Okota, Isolo LCDA. We went to inspect conditions, coordinate the evacuation of the remaining waste backlog and organise a plan to keep this major thoroughfare clean. We have been applying pressure along this corridor for some time. Repeated dumping by illegal cart pushers, alongside waste from unauthorised roadside trading and night-market activities, has continued to undermine that work. Today’s outing built on the earlier interventions. Its purpose was to connect clearance with the arrangements needed to prevent another backlog. When waste repeatedly returns to the same location, removing the pile addresses only part of the problem. We must also examine where the waste comes from, how people dispose of it, whether approved collection services are reaching them and what allows illegal dumping to continue. That is why we brought a broad team. Public Waste Operations, PSP Domestic Services, Commercial Services, Market Waste Services, Street Sanitation Services, Marine Waste Services, Project WISE and Public Affairs joined the exercise, alongside Administration, Human Resources, Audit and other support departments. Each has a part in the response. Evacuation must connect with routine sweeping. Household, commercial and market waste must enter the appropriate collection services rather than end up on the median. Our marine team brings attention to the risk of waste moving from streets into waterways. Surveillance and enforcement must work alongside public engagement. Administration, HR and Audit also need to understand the conditions on the ground. Staffing, deployment, operational support and accountability for resources all affect whether a road stays clean. I want the colleagues who support and scrutinise operations to see the challenges our crews face and understand what consistent service requires. Bringing these functions together allows us to examine the whole problem, rather than leave each department to address one part in isolation. Our crews deployed compactor trucks, a payloader, tipper trucks and sweepers to tackle the remaining backlog. Advocacy teams engaged people along the corridor on proper waste disposal. The enforcement team sealed more than 25 premises over environmental and related infractions, including illegal stalls on road setbacks and premises accommodating unauthorised roadside trading. Officers also apprehended cart pushers suspected of illegal dumping. The Lagos State Taskforce and KAI supported the operation. Enforcement matters, but it cannot substitute for reliable service. Equally, deploying more trucks will not solve the problem while people continue to treat the median as a disposal point. The plan following clearance must connect collection coverage, sweeping, checks on repeat dumping locations and prompt enforcement. It must account for activity after dark, not just conditions during daytime inspections. It must also identify who is responsible for each task and how service failures will be corrected. Accountability applies to us and to those we serve. Residents and businesses must use approved waste collectors and keep their waste properly contained. Service providers must collect reliably. Missed collections need a response from LAWMA and the responsible operator, not another pile on the roadside. Paying someone to remove waste from a compound does not solve the problem if that person deposits it on the median. It transfers the burden to neighbours, road users, sweepers and the public. I thank our frontline crews, colleagues across the Authority and enforcement partners for today’s work. @jidesanwoolu @drobafemihamzat @tokunbo_wahab @followlasg #KeepLagosClean

Residents experience our work through the condition of their streets, the reliability of waste collection and the response they receive when something goes wrong. Every department at @Lawma_gov contributes to that experience, including colleagues whose work usually keeps them behind a desk. The theme of this year’s Customer Service Week is #TheExtraMile. In order to actualize this, our administrative and support staff joined our sweepers and operational teams to clean streets and medians and evacuate illegally dumped waste along Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, in Obalende, along Mushin-Oshodi Road, and around Idi-Oro. I value this exercise for the opportunity it gives backroom staff to understand the work they support. Working alongside a sweeper or an evacuation crew brings the demands of the job into clearer view. It also helps connect decisions made in the office with their consequences in the field. The important question is what we take back to our desks. Does an operational request receive quicker attention? Does a field team get the support it needs? Does a resident receive a clear response and proper follow-through? These are practical tests of whether the experience improves our service. I thank the colleagues who stepped out to help, and our sweepers and operational teams who do this work every day. Their daily effort deserves recognition, respect and dependable support throughout the year. #TheExtraMile #CustomerServiceWeek2026 #CSWeek2026 #LAWMAcares
