What a week for OPUF and @waq0r! First, a paper in Health Economics ➡️➡️onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
then, a surprise mention of OPUF in a paper in The American Statistician on parole board decisions! tinyurl.com/52k288dc
3/3 And a poster reporting an experimental version of the @EuroQol EQ-5D-Y, modified for used in 2-4 year olds by @AlexVanHeusden@kmdalziel, which is part of our @QUOKKA_Research work, is on poster board 5065. I'll be around all morning if anyone wants to talk about our work!
This webinar is on *now*...a really impressive body of theoretical and empirical work by our wonderful
@HEU_unimelb PhD student Lachie. @HealthPolicyUoM @jemimahride
2/3 The paper summarises the causes of differences in values for child & adult HRQoL, as measured by EQ-5D instruments @stolk_elly @rich_norman@tianxinpan@QUOKKA_Research
Want to know more about @QUOKKA_Research? We've got 5 papers being presented at #IHEA2023Congress TODAY on a wide range of aspects of measuring and valuing child HRQoL for use in CEA. Details on the @QUOKKA_Research twitter account.
As the only academic in a family of farmers, I have to tell you that my brother winning a prize for the biggest turnips has caused more excitement than any paper I have ever published, ever.
I got to visit my lovely friend and colleague Yan Feng at @QMUL earlier this year - great to see her doing so well - and to see her excellent choice of health economics textbooks for teaching!👍@DrPanik
It was lovely to receive this award 'in real life' in Boston #ISPOR2023, albeit a few years after my term as @ISPORorg president! It was a fantastic leadership experience - challenging, but highly rewarding. Thank you to the ISPOR team for the professional support!
1/2 Today is ANZAC day. >18,000 NZers were killed in WW1 - a shocking number for a tiny country - including 3 of my grandfather’s brothers. At dawn, all around the country, people gathered at these memorials.
Thought I’d share this lovely picture of my Mum, who died last week. She was a professional pianist and farmer and quite a character. She was still playing the piano at her care home (‘to entertain the old people’) until just a few months ago.
twitter is preventing me from following anyone new - I just get this message 👇 I'm nowhere near the limits for adding new follows. Hey @elonmusk can you fix this for me?
One of my favourite books, by one of my favourite economists. I loaned my copy to someone and can't remember who! I only lend books to people I really like, so I know its being well looked after somewhere. I'd love to get it back though.
Have spent today thinking through (again) the normative issues around valuation of child HRQoL. Was reminded of this quote from Victor Fuchs - one of my favourites:
Fantastic meeting yesterday on @HQSCNZ plans for a #PROMs programme across NZ health care sector. PROMs already collected by @ACCNZ, @southerncross & others; @HQSCNZ will develop a coherent approach across the sector to put patient outcomes at the heart of healthcare decisions
icymi, here are 3 key messages about #PROMs from the #ISPOREurope plenary:
1. Collect meaningful data from patients 2. Do meaningful things with the data 3. Focus on what healthcare decisions will be improved, and how it will benefit patients @ISPORorg @EuroQol
#ISPOREurope today: I'll be speaking at this morning's plenary on Real World Patient-Centred Research: Is it Possible Between Countries?
I'll be presenting on "Real-world use of PROs in routine outcomes measurement: What have we learned?" #PROMS#HEOR@EuroQol@HEU_unimelb
shoes that I *actually* wore in London vs. my shoes now in New Zealand: two pairs of gumboots (one for 'good'), hiking boots and jandals. London shoes increasingly looking like historical instruments of torture.
(1/3) Loved London podcaster Helen Zaltzman's @AllusionistShow on Eponyms & why things tend to get named after men. Only occurred to me days later that I HAVE DONE EXACTLY THIS
Want to know more about EQ-5D-5L value sets? ▶️@EuroQol webinar Mon June 20th.
I'll be talking about 'which value set to use?' based on Ch.5 of this book, by @DrPanik@finc8 & me.
Book can be downloaded here: tinyurl.com/ypef9fey
The @ISPORorg statement 'ISPOR stands with #Ukraine' included a really good set of links at the end about practical ways of helping. The statement, and the links, can be found here: ispor.org/heor-resources/new…
Hey, fellow @ISPORorg members! It’s time to vote for your next president! Here’s a little video message from me about this election & videos from each of our two brilliant candidates: @jasminepwu and @ORourke_B

The ballot is now open, so VOTE!!🗳️
The QALY at 50 paper: I recommend you - *read the interview transcripts* in the supplementary material. Fascinating snippets - like this👇...could this quirk of history have contributed to widespread use of TTO? nice work, authors @rich_norman@pmc868tinyurl.com/yswjw8c2
It was my absolute pleasure to present the @ISPORorg Avedis Donabedian Outcomes Research Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor Ben van Hout. One of the most creative and innovative methodologists in health economics of his generation @EuroQol@Pharmerit@ScHARRHEDS
2/2 OPUF allows much smaller sub-group analyses than conventional methods - *and* it lets us examine individual utility functions. Variability between groups tends to be small; variability within groups considerable. eg: UK results for the 5L @waq0r@ScHARRHEDS@HEU_unimelb
#ISPOREurope issues panel, 30 Nov: 16:00 - 17:00 CET Expanding the Notion of Value of New Health Technologies: Should Preventive Interventions be Differently Considered Than Therapeutics? I'll be arguing for more joined-up thinking about value for money...@MSPGH@HEU_unimelb @
3/3 In the US 5L value set, pain is the most important dimension. In PROPr, pain is least important apart from sleep. Patterns of value decrements over severity levels very different too. Yet *both* are meant to represent the average preferences of US general public.
2/3 Key results: PROPr has a narrower value range than 5L & very different properties eg 20% of states in the US 5L value set have negative values – in PROPr less than 1%. Full results here: tinyurl.com/n4yvev4e@PECjournal
To everyone who has had unexpected cat-bottom-zoom-bombing from my cat this year, I apologise. I thought you might like to see what his front half looks like too. He always has this slightly disapproving look on his face when I am working. #CatsOfTwitter
Two stories in my local paper @odtnews this weekend: Keas (a notoriously cheeky NZ native parrot) taught to use touch screen computers. And NZ users of software @SlackHQ report having issues. Just a coincidence? 🤔 #parrothackers#wildconspiracy
our book now has a movie!😀Lovely to see a preview of a new animation from @EuroQol about the EQ-5D descriptive system & ways of analysing profile data @DrBasie@DrPanik...coming soon to a (small) screen near you!
