Why I Don't Drink Beer. As a teenager, I watched my dad( i hope he doesn't read this. Anyways na Rev Fr i be, he must understand) smoke like chimney and drink as well. The memorable thing about his beer moments in the house was his habit of buying coke and fanta for us as he drank his beer. Suddenly, the man stopped drinking and smoking. It was abrupt. One of these days I'm going to ask him what made him stop. I'm guessing that my mum has everything to do with it, maybe she threatened to dump his broke butt. My first contact with alcohol was in my secondary school years. The usual case of peers messing with what parents have told them to avoid. I tasted the greenish liquid and almost spat it out. It didn't taste sweet like fanta, coke or malt. It didn't make any good impression and they say first impression matters. My first taste of beer offered no pleasure, it didn't stick, and that was it. The next time I would taste beer would be in the major seminary. I used to be very skinny and was the butt of everyone's joke. Trying to add some flesh by all means, I tried mixing peak milk with Guinness. Tried it a number of times, the Guinness still overpowered the malt with it's wicked bitterness and the fatness I was looking for didn't come immediately, that was it, I quit. I don't take beer for no religious reason, I don't take it because it never appealled to me. The peer pressure to taste beer is called CONTAGION. The likeness developed by that initial taste that makes someone drink habitually subsequently is called STICKINESS. Teenagers now smoke, alot of them become HOOKED for life. The two major reasons they smoke is described by those two words: CONTAGION AND STICKINESS. Despite the warning against smoking like THE FEDERER MINISTRY OF HEALTH WARNS THAT SMOKERS ARE LIABLE TO DIE YOUNG, and despite the alarming health problems smoking and alcohol cause, people still cling to them. Malcolm Gladwell analyzed the phenomenon in his book The Tipping Point with those Two words. There are people who make smoking, drinking, partying, gambling and other defiant acts contagious. They are usually cool and the kind of individuals others admire. One of the major reasons smoking, drinking, gambling and the likes will never stop is because the people our teenagers see as COOL dudes and ladies do those things publicly in movies, music videos and public places. Our celebrities are contagious, whatever kids associate them with will spread like epidemics. The second issue is STICKINESS. While contagiousness is much of a quality of a person, stickiness is much the quality of the message. If a teenage girl watches an advert or music video where every girl who gets the attention of the handsome guys is scantily and indecently dressed, it sticks with her and she somehow believes that she has to dress that way to get the same attention. When teenagers watch adverts or videos of the celebrities who are rich, famous and pretty puff smokes and drink, the message sticks, they believe that's how cool people roll. Beer got to me by CONTAGION, but it failed to have a hold on me for want of STICKINESS. It is also established that our Genetic composition can play a role in stickiness. Most people who get hooked to alcohol and cigarettes found them pleasurable at their first sips and puffs, others didn't. It is suggested here that disparity in biological composition is a factor. Till today, I still don't get how people enjoy the harsh taste of dry red wine or the nasal punching aroma of schnapps, ogogoro, or the bitter taste of beer. To some people, beer tastes sweet, to some it is just another paradol in liquid form.To all, they pose serious health risks and that's why we must find a way to make people who take them do so in harmless measures. This is not my autobiography or my dad's. This is not a theology either. This is just a bit of the psychology, sociology and biology of certain habits. What you do with it is your choice.
