Advancing Soil and Land Management Research for Uganda’s Pearl Sweet Oil Today, NARO was pleased to host representatives from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) @ACIARAustralia at the Secretariat. The DG acknowledged the Australian Government’s support to NARO through various initiatives since 2014. These collaborations have focused on trees for food security @NAFORRI_UG , strengthening agricultural value chains and, importantly, building human capacity. Following the discovery of Pearl Sweet Oil @MEMD_Uganda, the engagement was particularly timely. Plans to establish an agroforestry green belt along the oil pipeline will require strong scientific foundations in soil research and sustainable land management. Discussions explored potential areas of collaboration, including the development of soil and land management strategies, formulation of supportive soil policies, promotion of soil-management innovations, and strengthening human capacity in soil research.

NARO today hosted @CABI_News CEO Dr Daniel Elgerat its headquarters in Entebbe to explore new areas of collaboration in climate change adaptation, AI, digitalisation, data governance, pest & disease management and joint resource mobilisation. NARO DG Dr Yona Baguma reaffirmed NARO’s commitment to working with CABI to harness AI, digitise research processes and develop data platforms that support evidence-based investment and decision-making. DREAM Rice Project Kicks Off at NARO! Today at the NARO Secretariat, Prof. Akio Ido, President of Kagoshima University, Japan, joined NARO leadership for the DREAM Rice Project kick-off meeting. The DG celebrated more than 20 years of Uganda–Japan collaboration, which continues to strengthen rice research and production. Key milestones include: ✅ Upcoming release of two(2) Super and two(2) Basmati rice varieties ✅ Rehabilitation of the Doho Rice Irrigation Scheme, supporting the growth of large-scale rice farming ✅ Uganda’s transformation from a major rice importer to a near self-sufficient producer serving both domestic and regional markets The DREAM Rice Project opens a new chapter in developing resilient rice varieties, strengthening farmer livelihoods and advancing Uganda’s food security. @NARO_NaCRRI @JicaUganda

Boosting Aquaculture in Northern Uganda @NARO_NgeZARDI & NaFIRRI-ARDC Kajjansi @nafirri held a hands-on training for 50+ farmers and extension staff across Lango & Acholi. Supported by @UCSATP, trainees gained key skills in: ✅Fish disease ID & prevention ✅Water quality testing ✅Farm-level biosecurity measures Covering Pader, Agago, Alebtong, Oyam, Kitgum & Dokolo.

This Week: The Soil Plant Clinic! For farmers in vulnerable communities like Karamoja, every planting decision counts. This week, our Soil & Plant Clinics in Nakapiripirit and Amudat tested soils for over 150 farmers. Today, @NAROUganda takes another major step in delivering quality research directly into farmers' hands. NARO has licensed Miracle Seeds Ltd and Hummer Uganda Ltd to multiply and distribute certified improved varieties. When buying seed, look for the NARO Varietal Identification Number (NVIN) on the package, your mark of a genuine NARO variety.

Reclaiming South Sudan’s Rice Bowl In partnership with @FAOUganda and South Sudan’s Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security, NARO is supporting efforts to revive Aweil’s historic status as South Sudan’s rice basket through quality seed production, farmer training and stronger local seed systems. The ambition is significant: 397 tonnes of certified rice seed, projected to support production of up to 25,000 tonnes of rice grain.
