🚨 Eelam Tamil held by Britain for five years dies in Eswatini
A 36-year-old man, identified only as KP under a court anonymity order, was found dead on 13 September at a guesthouse in Eswatini, a month after Britain transferred him there and a week before his visa was due to expire.
He fled Sri Lanka in 2007 after being tortured and sexually assaulted by the Sri Lankan military. Rescued by the Royal Navy near Diego Garcia in October 2021, he was held in the British tent camp on the island for years, spending eight months in a laundry room and a fortnight in a police cell without natural light. UNHCR raised deep concern about his conditions.
He was granted international protection in 2024, so could not be returned to Sri Lanka, but Britain refused him entry over criminal convictions and a court dismissed his challenge in 2025.
