To everyone who has always supported me, I created this account at the end of January this year, and I started posting every single day in March. Somehow, seven months have already passed. When I started, I never imagined that so many people would see my posts. There were plenty of days when I barely got any reactions, and honestly, I sometimes wondered, “Where is all of this going?” But I’ve been able to keep posting every day because of all of you who leave comments, like and repost my posts, and send me such kind messages. Thank you. Truly. I want to keep sharing Japan with the world. Most of the time, I want to share things that make you smile, Japanese culture, little things about Japan you may not know, and useful information for anyone planning to visit Japan. And sometimes, I’ll talk about politics and social issues too. I’ll keep sharing all kinds of things about Japan, beautiful traditions, hidden gems, interesting stories, useful travel tips, and sometimes even things that simply make you smile. Yes, sometimes even Sydney Sweeney. Above all, I hope this can be an account that makes you think, “Japan is pretty interesting,” “I want to visit Japan,” or simply, “I’m glad I stopped by this post today.” I’ll keep showing up every day. NOBODY TELLS AMERICANS THIS PART OF THE HIROSHIMA STORY. August 6, 1945. When the atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima, tens of thousands of people were killed. Among them were also 12 American prisoners of war who happened to be held in the city after their aircraft had been shot down. Their deaths were largely unknown to the American public for decades. (PBS) One of those who refused to let them disappear from history was a Japanese man named Shigeaki Mori. Mori was only eight years old when the bomb exploded. He survived. Decades later, he learned that American prisoners had also died in the same bombing. Instead of seeing them simply as former enemy soldiers, Mori began investigating who they were and what had happened to them. He spent roughly four decades researching their stories, examining records and searching for their families in the United States. He eventually contacted relatives of nine of the twelve men and helped their names be registered among the victims remembered at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park. (PBS) Mori’s reason was remarkably simple. He believed that the victims’ names should be remembered regardless of their nationality. These were Americans. He was Japanese. Their countries had been at war. But their families had lost sons, brothers, husbands and uncles. And Mori wanted those families to know what had happened to the people they loved. Years later, some of those American relatives traveled to Hiroshima and met the Japanese man who had spent decades searching for their loved ones. What began as an investigation into the deaths of former enemies eventually became a story of friendship and reconciliation between their families. (UNIDIR → Building a more secure world.) Then, on May 27, 2016, something happened that almost feels impossible to imagine. President Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima. At the Peace Memorial Park, Obama met Shigeaki Mori. The two men embraced. A Japanese survivor of the atomic bombing was standing face to face with the American president, decades after Mori had begun searching for the American servicemen who had died in that same bombing. (PBS) Think about how complicated that history is. The United States and Japan had once been enemies. Hiroshima had become one of the darkest symbols of that war. Yet decades later, one Japanese survivor spent his life making sure that twelve Americans would not be forgotten. He did not erase history. He did not deny the suffering of Hiroshima. He simply believed that remembering the dead should not depend on which country they came from. That is the part of Hiroshima’s history I think deserves to be remembered. Sometimes reconciliation does not begin with governments. Sometimes it begins with one ordinary person deciding that someone else’s son should not be forgotten.
