Several protesters were detained in Delhi on Friday as a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar unfolded amid heavy police restrictions. The protest, organised by the All India Students’ Association (AISA) along with civil society groups, was announced by AISA president Neha Bora, with activists and public figures including Yogendra Yadav among those backing the call. But protesters were stopped from entering the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar. Police told them they did not have permission to enter the area, following which several protesters were detained. In an interview with The Quint, Bora spoke about the police action, the restrictions on the protest and why the groups are demanding accountability from the Election Commission. The protest comes amid growing criticism of Kumar following reports about disagreements within the Election Commission over decisions linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
