Violence soon erupted.   But Jewish Canadians did not stand alone. TMU’s external review, conducted by the Honourable Mary Lou Benotto in response to violent incidents on campus, delivers a stern warning: these “symptoms of a deteriorating campus climate, absent decisive institutional action, are likely to recur.” The review also found that TMU already had policies “capable of addressing much of the conduct it examined, but too often failed to apply them consistently and decisively.” That is why CIJA's Legal Task Force is supporting a Jewish student’s lawsuit to hold TMU accountable. With classes set to resume next month, it is chilling that TMU announced a "Task Force" to "consider and respond" to Justice Benotto's recommendations with an "implementation blueprint" by March 2027. A disturbing report by @StewGlobal reveals that a PhD student at Carleton University -- who even received a scholarship and whose current whereabouts are unknown -- was flagged by CSIS after allegedly conducting research that could advance Iran's weapons of mass destruction and missile programs. Canada's universities are among the best in the world, but openness cannot come at the expense of national security. As foreign entities increasingly seek to exploit Canadian elected officials, universities, and security agencies must work together to protect sensitive research and ensure we are not a safe haven for operatives from terrorist states and entities. We are deeply concerned by reports that the Canadian government is considering renewing diplomatic ties with Iran while our own security agencies are warning that the Islamic regime is actively threatening members of the Iranian diaspora and the Jewish community here in Canada. This also stands in direct contradiction to the Foreign Minister's stated position in February that diplomatic relations would not be re-established while the current Islamic regime remains in power. At a time when foreign actors are threatening Canadians and Iran continues to export violence across the region, the Canadian government must put security at home first and remain clear-eyed and consistent when it comes to foreign policy.
