"AA troops came into downtown, forced the people to leave their homes and started torching houses," Nay San Lwin, co-founder of the Free Rohingya Coalition advocacy group told Reuters, based on what he said were eyewitness accounts. "While the town was burning, I spoke with several people I have known and trusted for years. They all testified that the arson attack was done by the AA." reuters.com/world/asia-pacif…

The Genocide General belongs on trial, not on a red carpet. Min Aung Hlaing is wanted under an arrest warrant for genocide and crimes against humanity. Malaysia can still change course: @anwaribrahim should arrest #MinAungHlaing, not host him. brouk.org.uk/malaysia-implem…

“The genocide has never stopped. Sending Rohingya back to this is not repatriation,” Nay San Lwin, cochair of the Arakan Rohingya National Council (ARNC), a group representing the Rohingya, told Al Jazeera. “It is sending people back to a killing field. We call on Malaysia to halt all returns of Rohingya to Myanmar until it is safe.” He argued that Malaysia’s decision to send refugees back to Myanmar came at a time when intense fighting was taking place between the army and rebel groups, including the Arakan Army. “The Myanmar military has lost control of much of the Rohingya homeland, and its fighting with the Arakan Army is still ongoing, with Rohingya caught in the middle. Both the military and the Arakan Army are committing atrocities against the Rohingya,” he said. aje.news/rded9f

“The nine-year commemoration must spark immediate action, not just statements. All supporters and allies must unite to pressure the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army to end violence against the Rohingya and establish safe conditions for survivors to return home,” — my comment in @AJEnglish aljazeera.com/news/2026/8/25…

Dr. Maung Zarni | Burmese Author & Human Rights Activist | Free Rohingya Coalition (@FreeRoCoalition): Even Myanmar's strongest supporter, China - and to a degree India - grew worried about the junta collapsing. Neither wanted a Balkans or Syria scenario on their doorstep. Both share over 1,000 miles of border with Myanmar. China stepped in. Russia had always backed the military - 25 years of technological & military cooperation. India followed its own strategic calculus. The result: a weakened military regime backed unconditionally by three major global powers - China, India & Russia. The regime is willing to kill its way back to survival. While for the democratic opposition, the situation is looking increasingly dire.

Malaysia will not repatriate Rohingya refugees to Myanmar if they risk persecution or threats to their lives, said government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil. He said Wisma Putra and the Home Ministry are still reviewing repatriation criteria with Myanmar’s government before any action is taken. 🧵1
The proposed repatriation of 5,000 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar could expose them to renewed persecution and violence, former Klang MP Charles Santiago said. "If there are no credible guarantees of safety, dignity, citizenship and voluntary return, this is not a diplomatic achievement to shout about, but a moral failure." 🧵1
