Some connectivity news from England: Newcastle City Council has used OpenRoaming to unify hundreds of public-access Wi-Fi locations throughout the city into a single framework that allows users to seamlessly travel between participating networks without the need to log in again at each.
Newcastle's deployment involves libraries, museums, council buildings, commercial spaces, streets and public areas across a city of 300,000 residents. A separate pilot is now extending the same model onto the Tyne and Wear Metro. Users connect once and automatically reconnect when they reach another participating location.
The Wireless Broadband Alliance’s case study puts numbers on how it has landed: 786,817 total logins as of May 2026 and a 95% repeat-visitor retention rate. Those figures matter together: the service has seen substantial use, and that use is not merely one-off. People may try public Wi-Fi once because it is available; they return when it works.
For the connectivity industry, Newcastle provides a meaningful example of what OpenRoaming can look like at city scale. The standard is not new, but Newcastle has applied it on a large scale with usage numbers to match.
Once Wi-Fi access is federated like this, capacity that was previously scattered across individual hotspots becomes easier to aggregate into something carriers can use and network operators can monetize. Making that work at scale, however, still requires a commercial layer: carriers, MVNOs and eSIM providers need a way to access available capacity under common terms, with demand automatically matched to supply and settlement handled across participating networks.

@josesanchezhb from the Science team and Mr.Rose, the incubation lead, attended AI Summit Barcelona as guests, two days at WTC Barcelona with 10,000+ builders and 200+ speakers from across European AI.
Google Cloud, AWS, NVIDIA, OpenAI and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center were all in the room. So was a bio-inspired AI that runs on ordinary CPUs.
