On October 20-21, the US Army conducted a large-scale training exercise to practice digging mass graves at a scale not seen since the Korean War. They rehearsed how to dig and backfill mass graves for fallen casualties using bulldozers and excavators while carefully preserving simulated remains for later identification and repatriation. The exercise, involving fatality management specialists, preventive medicine teams, and chaplains, showed that crews could prepare a trench for 20 remains in about 1 hour 15 minutes. An engineer company could handle up to 2,400 temporary burials in 24 hours nonstop.
