Do you actually control the fight when they go into melee or is it automated?

You can control. Similiar to Archon Ultra.

Wow - never played this one... is the game good at all? What genre? RPG or more action-oriented?

The game is quite similar to Archon. So you have a strategy with arcade combat.

I remember these pretty well, the wizard was especially well done.

That's pixel art. In a CRT would be amazing.

Early to mid 90's PC pixel art + SSI + Silicon Knights... a truly lost civilization. They were around until the early 2010's.

Dos games were special. 100% creativity, no room for hand holding and watered down gameplay.

The city of ash. A beautiful retro look sometimes makes the intense energy feel more natural. Even as we advance to generative holographic design, simulation and live action technology, hyper realistic environments don’t always make sense in escapism.

god, those old school portraits of characters, classes, and monsters hit different back then, I don't want to shit on newer games, but some old school fantasy games had some really charming graphics.
