@dhh I'm using your kernel, webcam, etc patches with the new XPS 16 on stock arch, but can't get the IR camera to work (I only see the ISP camera and a device called "IPU7" from v4l2-ctl). Any hope for that to work, or any patch I may be missing?

@mike_petriello Two questions for you 1. Why do Fangraphs, Baseball Reference, and Baseball Savant all disagree about the number of PAs which had an 0-2 count at some point during them? Using 2024 as an example: Fangraphs says 39,965 PAs, BRef says 39,480, Savant says 39,529

2. Why does checking the PA flag (or selecting all the options in "PA result" excluding CS) cut the number of results for this query in half. Selected under "pitch" is every outcome but "foul". Isn't PA Result the *eventual* result of the PA even if it didn't end on that pitch?

Finally got around to starting my blog which is (for now) focusing on a sort of Sabermetrics "tutorial" series. The first article (on OBP) is out now, with new articles weekly. There's also a "prelude" article which outlines the basic structure statsbyjason.substack.com/p/…

@tangotiger another WAR question. Basically a shower thought. Some people criticize WAR for giving 0 credit to pitchers for defensive value. And, to some extent, they impact the defensive value of fielders by increasing the number of opportunities a player receives.

Could a WAR implementation give a pitcher a share of their defense's defensive runs based on their groundball and fly ball rates? Essentially giving them credit for pitching for their defense.

Eg if a pitcher has a 5% above average fly ball rate and their outfielders are worth 10 runs below average (full season stats prorated to their time on the mount), the pitcher would get -0.5 runs.

Is it cheating if I post a sabermetrics library article? This article is easily one of my favorites because I find myself using it often if I'm ever calculating wOBA or need to be reminded of how something works. A close second is the wRAA/wRC+ article. library.fangraphs.com/offens…

Rep. Hoyer defends Rep. Tlaib (who’s the sole Palestinian American in Congress) as she faces conservative backlash for a Palestinian flag outside her office “She’s Palestinian,” he tells reporters. “That doesn't mean she's a terrorist. It doesn't mean that she condones this”

Seiya Suzuki rips a home run to left field off White Sox’s Toussaint to tie the game at 3 in the 4th. Since being back in the lineup from his mental break on the bench, Suzuki is 7-for-17 with a double, triple, two home runs and four RBIs.

MLB made a scoring change in the July 16 Red Sox-Cubs game:   Wong’s double in the 5th has been changed to a two-base error on Hoerner.  As a result, the five runs charged to Justin Steele in the inning are now unearned.   Steele’s season ERA is now down to 2.46.

It's not trade news, but a source tells me Cubs top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong is being promoted to Triple-A Iowa. He's crushed Tennessee of late and really taken on the challenges player development have given him. 150 wRC+ with 11.9% walk rate since May 23.
