The media will run the story: “CM himself began the demolition drive from his own ancestral home for road widening.” What it probably won’t tell you is the other part of the story. This road widening is part of a larger infrastructure push that is expected to drive up land values in Ujjain. And that matters because a recent Indian Express investigation found that the CM’s family and family-linked real-estate companies acquired at least 168 acres across 137 plots for ₹45 crore after he became Chief Minister. Even more interestingly, the investigation found that around 111 acres of that land lies alongside road and highway projects announced by his government. So while the cameras show the CM’s ancestral home giving way for a wider road, there is another question worth asking: Who owns the land around these new roads, and who stands to benefit when its value goes up? The Indian Express put those questions to the CM and his office. They did not respond to the newspaper’s detailed questionnaire.

For opposition: Yes, elections are being rigged. But when you continue to participate in rigged elections, you legitimise these elections and help maintain the illusion that they are free and fair. Maybe you keep contesting because you fear that if you don’t, you will stop existing. But what kind of existence are you trying to protect when votes are being stolen, your MLAs and MPs are being poached, and your parties are being split? This is not political survival. You are simply trying to stay alive in a system that can weaken you, split your party or take away your elected representatives whenever it wants. How long can you survive like this? And you cannot talk about election rigging only when it happens in states that matter to you and remain silent when it happens elsewhere. If elections are being rigged, it should matter regardless of the state or which party is affected. You cannot keep saying the game is rigged while continuing to play it. Your participation is the only thing that gives these rigged elections legitimacy. Think about the nation and its democracy before thinking about your own political survival. Take a stand and stop participating in rigged elections.
