Day 1 of #ANZSVS2026 is a wrap. PAD debates, Rutherford Lecture from Prof Wesley S Moore on carotid disease, global vascular care updates from Fiji & South Africa, a big afternoon on diabetic foot disease & limb salvage, and a haka welcome on the QT rooftop as the sun went down.
A/Prof Peter Nottle AM: A cornerstone of Williamstown Hospital when I was an HMO and registrar there. One of Australia’s laparoscopic pioneers. He taught me far more than technique.
Bob went on to build the Surgical Oncology program at Peter Mac - a standout in this country, in the mould of Murray Brennan’s work at Sloan-Kettering. This AM, adding to his existing OAM, caps an extraordinary career.
Prof Robert Thomas AM OAM: Head of the professorial unit at Western Health when I was a first-year intern. My first theatre day with him was liver retraction for an open Nissen fundoplication. The standard in that room was unmistakable.
Politically incorrect but memorable quotes from @aortic_asia:
• “Open AAA repair is like a first wife - dependable. EVAR is like the second - sexy but high maintenance.”
• “Small AAA are like 🦒necks, large tortuous AAA are like 🦛 ”
• “Unlike doctors, AI gives no attitude”
Heading to Singapore for #AorticAsia2026 as invited faculty, supported by the Keatha Stebbins Doctors Grant through @Epworth Foundation. Keatha was a Tasmanian midwife who left her estate to healthcare. Her legacy is now funding vascular surgery education. Grateful. 🇸🇬

You can take a guess as to who this week’s guest speaker was, but apart from the insights, I was very impressed by the fact that only one slide was required for a 2 hour masterclass on #leadership. Thanks @DrMukeshH and Vinay Rane for organising.
As a vascular surgeon, I deal with the impact of skin injury, chronic ulcers and gangrene from poor arterial or venous circulation on a daily basis. This requires a multiskilled, multidisciplinary team and this is reflected in the leadership and membership of @WoundsAus.
