In addition to being one of the 20th century's greatest literary stylists, Saul Bellow was an avid defender of Western Civilization.
He was famously accused of being a racist for coming out with the following cheeky remark:
"Who is the Tolstoy of the Zulus? The Proust of the Papuans? I'd be glad to read him."
Though Bellow later attempted to distance himself from these words, he certainly had a point.
