Admitted y’day that I’d forgotten BobbyC

Gary Neville?!?!?!?!?!? No Bobby Charlton?

I didn’t need a re-run. Saw it live in ‘66. Great players can only play in their era…
Replying to @patmurphybbc
Sorry Pat…have you watched a re-run of the 66 WC Final lately. Both England full backs -Wilson and Cohen - wouldn’t hold a candle to Cole or Pearce.

I didn’t. England managers did though…

You forgot Statham at left back...

My Back Pages, indeed, John. I hope you’re going of your own volition. You deserve that, for your forthright, brave, forensic work down the years - calling out the obtuse, selfish & myopic in football. A fairly crowded field. Good luck in whatever you do & thanks for your support

Its been a long time, Nick. I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Even tho’ he won the FA Cup twice & European Cup Winner’s Cup in the next 10 yrs. But he had lost a yard of pace after ‘66

Have you omitted Charlton on purpose or was that an oversight?

Perfect pairing. Instinctive players.

Fair enough, can't argue with that. Just wondered how Greaves (who I'm too young to have seen) might have looked alongside someone like Ossie, someone to play off a bit more.

It’s not just about goals - altho’ Osgood scored enough. He had the technique & self-confidence ideally suited to international football.
Astle had a far better scoring record than Osgood. And of course had just finished Division 1 top scorer with 25 in 34.

Greaves to play slightly behind Lineker, using his dribbling skills. Left-footed, Lineker right-footed, who liked to play as far up the park as possible. Don’t think they’d get in the way of each other.
Replying to @patmurphybbc
Do you need Lineker if you've got Greaves? Wouldn't some kind of 'foil' work better?

He wasn’t, sadly - just 19 at the time. But he was still special for almost another decade. Ramsey didn’t trust him - wasn’t capped first for another 4 yrs. The Shed adored Ossie ….

I remember he said that he wasn’t quite the same after his broken leg

Always risking a bashing doing these best elevens. Guess people stick to own era of covering football. Mine be different. Cole for Wilson. Kane for Greaves. Barnes for Finney. The rest i can go with. A tough task

Oops…. knew I’d forget someone. Bobby Charlton for me the best England player of my time. Yes,Charlton in for Gascoigne. The complete package, with a great temperament. Mea culpa!
No Charlton? He definitely gets in above Gazza.

Phew! Hostage to fortune, John! Without great thought, here goes…. Banks….. G. Neville, Ferdinand, Moore, Wilson…. Edwards, Gascoigne,Robson… Finney, Lineker, Greaves Cloughie would be too bored, hanging around, waiting for a game every few days. So Sir Alf : won WCup.
Replying to @patmurphybbc
Afternoon Pat - with your extensive knowledge and history of English football over the years, who would be your dream starting XI if each player was in their prime right now. And who would be the gaffer? (Mr Clough 😉) 👍

International football started before the 1980s. Agree Cole was outstanding but for me Wilson was so reliable. Brilliant, clean tackler, great positional sense.
Replying to @patmurphybbc
Ashley Cole my best, from mid 80s onwards. He must run Ray close?

Ossie had been led to believe he would start v Brazil. He told me ‘I was flying in training. Couldn’t believe Alf didn’t pick me. Neither did Bobby Moore, who asked Alf if he was sure about that’.
Replying to @patmurphybbc
He definitely wouldn't have missed the chance that Jeff Astle did! Him coming on ahead of Ossie was criminal imo.
