After he had slashed a dinghy mid-Channel, Danny Tommo has been charged with criminal damage, while “reckless as to whether life would be endangered”. I am not convinced that the police are wise to go down this rabbit hole. Do they really want to pursue a charge of damaging a dinghy procured by organised crime for the purpose of criminal activity which had already been completed and the dinghy abandoned, while the single “rescue worker” briefly on board was in absolutely no danger? The net effect of any court hearing can only strengthen Tommo’s growing reputation as an effective anti-migration activist, and should he ever be imprisoned (which in this case is probably unlikely) he will immediately be treated as another martyr to the cause.
