Hi! I’m doing a bit of solo consulting/freelance bizdev now. I love my main job but my freelancer visa requires multiple income sources. Three main things I can do for your indie game/studio:

Very true, "Just make a good game" is a silly thing to say, but it's how it is. Making a good game is hard, but please, if you're a dev, don't stress over wishlists, validation, traction, min-maxing your marketing. etc. It kinda don't matter in the end, only the game matters.
So, you wanna make videogames? You can't worry about things like crowds, competition or discovery. A million 'experts' online will tell you all the ways you will fail. In many ways the world was simpler and easier without the internet. You just made things. You focused on making your game. You were never going to compete with EA or Origin so who cares? There is a never ending hunger for good games. If this wasn't true the indie games wouldn't be huge today and shareware in the early 90s never would have been a thing. Turns out people everywhere just want good games - at all sizes, scopes and price points. Don't worry yourself out of making a game. Don't listen to internet experts telling you all the negatives. Ignore everything and focus on skills and making a good game. Get in there. Always room for one more game.

I'm really sick of these Ex-Rioter "indie" studios who pay themselves 200k salaries and grift 15 million dollars from venture capital just to do it again. Tarnishing indie funding confidence for everyone else. Investors see "Rioter" or "Ex-Blizzard" and dump money on them.

Everyone's upset about the Steam algo change and meanwhile an indie with only a few thousand wishlists just got a massive bump thanks to the new Personal Calendar. I think everyone's missing the most significant part of the Steam algorithm update - the Personal Calendar is going to be a boon for indies
Saw someone on Reddit get 2k wishlists today after the change and it pointed to that

Maybe a hot take, but from the consumer standpoint the change definitely makes sense. Popular Upcoming used to list games that were not popular. Hopefully the personal calendar visibility makes up for the lost Popular Upcoming visibility for smaller games!
Steam just made a change that's really gonna hurt future indie games. The Popular Upcoming page used to list games chronologically by release time. As long as you had enough wishlists to make the cut (~6k to 7k), you'd get some time at the top of the list for people to discover your game. Now it's listed algorithmically, with far more large games from major companies and publishers on the list, even those releasing two weeks away. The lowest wishlist count on there right now is 80k, when before it would've been 10 indie games as low as 6k wishlists. Feeling very lucky our game's early access release barely made it out before this changed. It was worth probably 1k wishlists for us, and we had some really unfortunate timing/positioning too. It can be worth thousands of wishlists and sales for smaller games. Steam is more heavily prioritizing larger games, with the budget and time to grow to enormous wishlist totals, or the rare indie viral hit. The small to mid-sized games just lost a way to find players. Steam players lost a tool to discover cool smaller games.
