I think the hubris of human beings and the unnecessary cruelty we inflict on the innocent will ultimately be our undoing. Not only because we’re ravaging the only habitable planet we know of, but because we’re eroding our own souls for the sake of profit and greed. When we give power to those who have no concern for life, we are inviting destruction into our moral consciousness. It’s easy to dismiss other forms of life as mere resources to be plundered for the sake of economic growth when you’re cold and small-minded. It’s much more difficult to accept when you see other beings as equally important as yourself. Everyday we allow this to go on is another day we all step closer to our own downfall. And truthfully, a species as barbaric and heinous as ours can be doesn’t deserve to go on. The only way forward is empathy. Not just for other human beings, but for all life. We live in a fragile ecological structure that’s quickly collapsing. If we don’t change our own souls for the better, we’re going down with it.
