uMHLATHUZE MUNICIPALITY – EXPLAINING THE 71 COUNCIL SEATS
72% of voting districts counted so far
Residents of uMhlathuze, let's explain how the council seats work so that there is no confusion.
1. The MK Party is leading in the PR vote
The MK Party currently has 38.3% of the PR vote.
However, this percentage alone does not determine its final number of council seats. The IEC uses a formula that combines the votes received on the ward and PR ballots.
2. The MK Party has won 23 wards
The MK Party has reportedly won 23 of the municipality's 36 wards.
That represents approximately 63.9% of all ward seats in uMhlathuze.
3. How are the 71 council seats divided?
The council has 71 seats, divided as follows:
- 36 ward seats – awarded to the winning ward candidates.
- 35 PR seats – allocated through proportional representation.
The IEC first calculates each party's total entitlement using its combined ward and PR votes. It then deducts the ward seats already won by that party to determine its additional PR seats.
4. What does this mean for the MK Party?
The municipality has 71 seats.
A party needs at least 36 seats to have an outright majority and govern without coalition partners.
Although the MK Party has reportedly won 23 wards, we cannot yet conclude that it has exactly 27 seats based only on its 38.3% PR vote.
The final seat allocation will depend on the IEC's complete calculations.
CONCLUSION
The MK Party has reportedly won 23 of uMhlathuze's 36 wards and is currently polling at 38.3% on the PR ballot.
The results are still provisional, with 72% of voting districts counted.
We will provide another update once the counting reaches 100% and the IEC releases the final seat allocation.
