Students across Germany walked out of classes Friday, joining a nationwide school strike against against mandatory military screenings in preparation for war with Russia. In Hamburg, hundreds of students and activists marched through the city carrying placards and banners reading “Russia is not our enemy.” The mobilization there coincided with Red Storm Charlie, a Bundeswehr-led civil-military cooperation exercise hosted in the city this weekend that organizers say is an unnecessary preparation for war. Though German military service remains voluntary for now, new legislation at the start of this year requires all 18-year-old men to complete a questionnaire about their willingness and suitability to serve. Starting next year, men born in 2008 and later will be required to submit to mandatory medical examinations by Germany’s military healthcare system. If recruitment targets are missed, the Bundestag can vote to impose conscription, which it suspended in 2011 but never abolished.

Global oil markets are facing a historic loss of diesel supply: Diesel supply from the Middle East dropped by -835,000 barrels per day on average between March and August 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to Vortexa estimates. At the same time, Russian diesel supply fell -377,000 barrels per day. Meanwhile, Kpler estimates diesel supply was down -750,000 barrels per day in the Middle East over the same period and -361,000 barrels per day in Russia, while Energy Aspects estimates declines of -733,000 and -307,000 barrels per day, respectively. This puts the average estimated diesel supply loss at -772,667 barrels per day in the Middle East and -348,333 barrels per day in Russia, or -1.1 million combined. Furthermore, Russian diesel supply plunged -615,000 barrels per day YoY on average in July and August, following Russia's diesel-export ban. The global diesel market crisis is deepening.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti published and later deleted an article threatening Lithuania with a “short” war and possible nuclear strikes. The article, titled “Russia faces another special military operation. It will be very short,” discussed scenarios of missile attacks on Lithuania. The author, Alexander Nosovich, argued that Russia could use missiles with nuclear warheads instead of ground forces, claiming that a conflict in the Baltics would be quick due to geography. RIA Novosti removed the article several hours after publication, later stating that it did not reflect the editorial line, editorial policy, or state policy of Russia.

It is UN General Assembly week in New York. Anyone paying attention can see exactly what is happening in the world. The United States and China are exploring the possibility of reaching an understanding, the major powers are increasingly pursuing their own interests openly, while the international order of recent decades, and the international institutions representing it, are facing harsh and devastating criticism from all sides. Against this backdrop, the European Parliament is preparing a report on international law and the changing geopolitical environment. Yet the draft is full of the same old, meaningless Brussels clichés. The international order that the European Union is trying to defend at all costs no longer exists in this form. If we continue to speak and act as if it did, we will only make ourselves look ridiculous while Europe’s influence continues to decline. That is why European decision-makers must be confronted honestly with reality. We need a completely new approach. My first amendment is therefore clear: we must acknowledge that the current international system and its institutions are no longer capable of ensuring peace, stability and economic development to the same extent as they once did. We need new international legal frameworks, including new rules on migration and refugees. Until such a framework is established, unanimity in EU foreign policy should not be abolished but preserved and strengthened. The European External Action Service must serve the political and economic interests of the Member States, and in dealing with external partners it must be guided by mutual respect for sovereignty and common interests. The world has changed. We should not try to make reality fit the old rules on paper. Europe must adapt its policies to the new world as it actually exists.
