I have talked a lot about asymmetric plays, and things most people can afford. I believe a lot exist outside or Pokémon and One Piece, although Pokémon will always be the safer alpha play.
And so I try to find things that I call "zero or hero" and even things priced so low it doesnt matter if it goes to 0... but could be something. Stuff most people arent priced out of. That's how I felt about Ivy Pikachu and Singing Jigglypuff last year.
I have also been thinking a lot about Mario, because at least for me, it invokes a lot of nostalgia and is obviously Big IP. Super mario was of the first games I played (on the NES, but first iirc was duck hunt loll), played on the plane a lot as a kid, played on TI-84+ in class and I still play a lot of mario kart and smash.
For most IPs, Ive simply been going for the rookies of the most popular characters because theyre mostly under 1k raw. Mario's rookie though, as Jumpman in the 1991 Donkey Kong menko, is in the thousands right now. Still OK, but no longer quite asymmetric. But this relatively higher priced rookie, is also maybe proof/validation of demand/significance and a signal to look for follow on plays.
Assuming all of Mario IP grows in demand, what could be asymmetric? So my thesis is, if it does, whatever came from Jumpman era will be sought after.
I picked up some of the Topps Donkey Kong 1982 stickers as the full set goes for less than 100 USD and individual pieces for even less. You can even find uncut sheets cheap. I’d imagine supply is quite decent as you can find many good condition ones cheap, but they’re !1982!. Also picking up the game cartridge Jumpman made first appearance.
Now these may never play out, but given the age I also think downside is limited (although liquidity is a separate problem :P) and worth a bet if we think the *entire* collectibles space picks up.
Perhaps this liqudity build was 50 years in the making.
