AN INTERVIEW WITH OLIA LIALINA The net art pioneer, who has always treated the web as a medium, says the tech industry is working to make the digital world increasingly invisible, prompting her to demonstrate her belief in the care of digital art By Anika Meier rightclicksave.com/article/a…

»I want to be part of keeping the history of the web alive.« – Olia Lialina This is a photo I took of Olia Lialina and her partner, Dragan Espenschied, when I stayed at their place in southern Germany in 2020. She was kind enough to invite me to give a talk at Merz Akademie titled »Link in Bio. Artists on Instagram and Artists at the Limit?« Many years later, as the conversation has moved on from Instagram to other topics such as AI, Olia and I caught up to discuss digital art and the terminology around it today. 🔜 on Right Click Save (@RtClick_Save)

💭 In conversation with UBERMORGEN for The AI Art Magazine »Where Is My Biggest Beef with AI?« Or: lizvlx’s hot takes on AI 🔥 »And sometimes I wonder: Is AI really going to wipe out humanity, or is this partly men being terrified that there might be something they cannot control? I know I’m not the person who can stop AI. That isn’t within my sphere of action. Data centers are something we need to be very realistic about: where we build them, how we concentrate them, where they make sense and where they don’t. But I remember the rhetoric when the internet arrived: ›The internet will solve all our problems.‹ Now AI arrives and people say, ›It’s going to kill us all.‹ Personally, I would ask for a little nuance.«

»I think there has long been a misunderstanding among some people working in the commercial creative world. A lot of people thought they were somehow irreplaceable. But if you work in a commercial environment, you are always interchangeable. That is part of the basic idea of a commercial environment. And that must really hurt. I’m not making fun of these people. Imagine you’re a great illustrator and suddenly your work is no longer needed. That’s painful. But the same thing happened to the dinosaurs. Of course we lose something. Every time something disappears, we lose something. An individual illustrator will create images that AI would never arrive at because they can be genuinely original. AI doesn’t work that way.« – lizvlx (UBERMORGEN)

"Collectors opening their wallets and showing the works to people on their phones. That is social sharing" A reminder that digital collecting have a strong social dimension. Really enjoyed the interview between @postanika ’s and @mccoyspace @sleekmag
In conversation with Kevin McCoy for SLEEK What happened to NFTs?

AM When we first met a few years ago, I told you that you had changed my life, and I was not happy about it. (laughs) Because suddenly, being a curator in digital art became tied to the expectation of selling work. Curation was no longer primarily about creating context, but increasingly about selecting artists who performed well in the market. KMC We saw those dynamics play out: curation becoming tied to sales and digital art becoming increasingly centred around ownership and wallets. To go back to Vuk Ćosić’s conversation with you, one of the key figures of the 1990s net.art movement, he said: we had the browser, NFTs got the wallet. He meant it critically, in the sense that the artwork became reduced to the wallet. And that is true. As an artist, especially in that early Ethereum moment, producing work that ultimately ended up in a wallet did not feel great. It did not feel like making work had felt before. When you make work for a gallery exhibition, people experience it together. There is a social dimension and a physical presence to it. Doing a drop on a platform and having the work end up in people’s wallets was not the same experience.

Labor Day Weekend is for catching up with long reads. @postanika interview with @JanRobertLeegte is a highlight, I ♥️ the discussion of how Jan’s exploration of the materiality of computer mediums evolved and reflected the changes from net art to current NFT technologies. Also the physical translations of the materiality to galleries is super! Via @RtClick_Save rightclicksave.com/article/a…

Great talk & screening curated/mediated by @postanika today. Very large task the one they set out to do - “Who Shapes Culture in the Age of AI?” was the title. Love these conversations that leave us questioning things more than resolve them.
