冨樫義博は漫画化志望者へのコメントで、 『なるべく好きなものをいっぱい作って、「俺はこれが好きなんだ」っていうことを原稿にぶつけられると、読んでるこちらはやっぱりそれを感じられるので、そういう漫画をもっともっといっぱい読みたいと思います。』と述べている。（『ジャンプ流』） 冨樫義博が一番好きな映画で挙げているのはリドリー•スコットの『エイリアン』である。 『HUNTER×HUNTER』世界における暗黒大陸を、宇宙のメタファーとして捉えた時に、リドリー•スコットが描いた宇宙描写とダブる所がある。 『映画の画面は、ほとんど暗闇に満ちている。エイリアンと最初に邂逅する宇宙船の調査のシーンは特にそうだ。宇宙が、未知のものだらけで、ほとんど何も分かっておらず、私たちの視野に入っているものはほんのわずかにすぎないのだという、宇宙•世界に対する畏怖の念、崇高さの感情が湧き起こるように演出されている。』（論考:『リドリー•スコット作品における宇宙と人類』藤田直哉） 『HUNTER×HUNTER』の世界でも、暗黒大陸は『ここはもう人類の戻る場所ではない』『ここはデカすぎる』と描写される。 これらはあくまで推察に過ぎないが、冨樫義博はとにく好きなものを集めて、それをオマージュし、自分の作品に落とし込む、ということを何度もしてきている。 文章を書きたい人も、良い文章を書くには、まずは自分の好きなものをなるべく集めること、好きなものを知ること、その上でそれを自分なりに原稿にぶつけること。 ちなみにリドリー•スコットは黒澤明の映画を全部観ており、その中でも『七人のサムライ』と『蜘蛛巣城』をバイブルとして挙げている。 『音、泥、炎、それをどう扱えばいいのか、そのヒントが隠されている。』
